What is youth?

Youth is just like Kendo.

When an opportunity appears, even if it may vanish in an instant, you need the courage to charge forward with the spirit of a moth flying into a flame.

Even if you fall, it doesn't matter.

After all, you're young. You can simply pick yourself back up, brush the dust off, and try again.

Try again. Try again.

Until you are completely exhausted, collapsing onto the ground, gasping for breath, yet wearing a huge smile on your face—

grateful that you never gave up.

Because youth, after all,

is meant to be filled with passion.

Why do we take up the sword?

Perhaps, at first, it was simply because it looked cool.

Perhaps it was to fulfill a dream we carried from childhood.

Perhaps it was to chase the image of the swordsman we once imagined ourselves to be.

Perhaps it was to cultivate the mind—to find, through countless swings of the sword, a sense of stillness amidst the noise within us.

Perhaps it was to prove to ourselves that, even after all these years, we are still capable of learning, of enduring, of overcoming, and of accomplishing something we once thought beyond our reach.

The reasons may be different.

The paths may be different.

And we may have picked up the sword at different stages of our lives, carrying with us different stories, different hopes, and different burdens.

But once we take up the sword, we begin to walk the same path.

One step at a time.

One strike at a time.

We stumble. We grow tired. We fail.

And yet, we stand up, take our place on the floor, and continue.

For the path of Kendo is not a journey toward perfection.

It is a journey of becoming.

Becoming stronger than we were yesterday.

Becoming steadier when faced with adversity.

Becoming more disciplined, more humble, and more honest with ourselves.

Perhaps, in the end, the sword was never the destination.

It was simply the means through which we discover who we are—and who we are still capable of becoming.

Whatever brought us to the sword, may we continue to walk this path with courage, humility, and perseverance.

And may every strike bring us one step closer to becoming a better person than we were yesterday.

For us in Kendo, there is no such thing as different schools or factions. The concept of “dojo storming” simply does not exist.

We may have spent different lengths of time on this journey, and we may have reached different levels of proficiency, but ultimately, we are all people striving to improve ourselves through this art.

That is why it is very common for kendoka to visit different dojos and train together, no matter which country we are in.

We learn together, practice together, exchange experiences, and challenge one another.

We grow stronger together.

Because in Kendo, we all share the same passion.

A heartfelt thank you to our seniors from Muar and Kuala Lumpur — Lim (3rd Dan), Eileen (2nd Dan), and Mark (1st Dan) — for visiting our dojo and sharing your knowledge and guidance with us.

We sincerely hope to have the opportunity to meet and train together again in the future!

What does it take to succeed at something?

Some people would say talent.
Others would say hard work.

But for me, it is the ability to keep going.

The process of learning Kendo is not something that can easily be described as fun.

Men, kote, do, and thrusts to the throat.

Whether you are a complete beginner who has only been training for a week, or an eighth-dan master who has been practicing for fifty years, you are essentially doing the same things.

That is why my teacher once said:

“If just one out of ten beginners who walk through the door stays, that is already very good.”

Because it can be monotonous, many people simply don't stay.

But if you do stay, then through one swing of the sword after another, you begin to notice that you are just a little better than you were in the previous class.

And before you even realize it, you find yourself reaching a level you once never imagined you could achieve.

Because the remarkable things in life often happen without us even noticing.

Before we talk about talent and hard work, we first have to stay on the field.

In Kendo, etiquette comes before technique.

In Japanese Budo, we live by a simple principle:

“Begin with respect. End with respect.”

Before we learn how to strike,
we learn how to bow.

We bow to the dojo—
with gratitude for having a place to train.

We bow to our teachers—
with gratitude for their patience, guidance, and wisdom.

We bow to our training partners—
with gratitude for those who challenge us, support us, and walk the path alongside us.

And we bow to ourselves—
with gratitude for the discipline, courage, and effort we are willing to give.

Kendo is not simply about becoming stronger than someone else.

It is about becoming a better version of yourself.

Stay humble.
Stay respectful.
Stay willing to learn.

Because true strength does not begin with power.

It begins with humility.

Begin with Rei. End with Rei.
