Pilates History 101: The Elders

The Elders are a group of individuals that trained directly under Joseph Pilates, often thought of as Joseph Pilate’s protégés. Ron Fletcher, Kathy Grant, and Romana Kryzanowska are among the most renowned Pilates figures that are considered first generation instructors.

In 1971, when Clara Pilates was no able to run the New York Contrology studio, Romana, one of the principal Elders, took over studio operations. Years later, second generation teachers that learned from Romana, created a Pilates education program to carry on the legacy of Joseph Pilates and his method. To this day, the Peak Pilates curriculum has stood the test of time, representing the years of dedication to and preservation of the method 📚.
