跆(TAE)，意为以脚踢、摔撞； 拳(KWON)，以拳头打击； 道(DO)，是一种艺术方法。跆拳道是一种利用拳和脚的艺术方法。它是以脚法为主的功夫，其脚法占70%。跆拳道的套路共有24套；另外还有兵器、擒拿、摔锁、对拆自卫术及10余种基本功夫等。 跆拳道是经过东亚文化发展的一项韩国武术，以东方心灵为土壤，承继长久传统， 以“始于礼，终于礼”的武道精神为基础。
　　从字面含义可以看出， 是种手脚并用的武术搏击，但在有些竞技比赛中，如奥运会，部分技术，特别是手技，出于保护运动选手、增强比赛观赏性等原因而被限制。具体要求即手的攻击动作只可使用正击

拳（直拳），且只能攻击躯干部分被护具保护的位置。
正确说法是：起源于朝鲜北半岛，是由一位崔泓熙大将军所创，后来他退伍了，融合了民间元素，最后成型。
　　早期是由韩国古代三国之一新罗的跆根、花郎道演化而来的韩国民间较普遍流行的一项技击术，是一项运用手脚技术进行格斗的民族传统的体育项目。跆拳道源于朝鲜半岛三国时代的跆拳。其根源甚至可以追寻到古代的徒手搏击，另外，韩国民间秘密流传着民族武术，到朝鲜时代有《武艺图谱通志》出版，虽然跆拳道从，搏击，跆根，花郎道发展而来，但真正被大众接收，还是从上世纪50年代起，其内涵风格以及名字均得到规范和统一。“跆拳道”一词，是1955年由韩国的崔泓熙将军创造。其中“跆”指踢击（脚法）、“拳”指拳击，“道”则是代表道行、自己对礼仪的修练。据说崔泓熙将军早年在留学日本时，学习了日本松涛馆流空手道，并融入到跆拳道中去，因此在跆拳道的型中，可以看到少数松涛馆流的手部招式。总之现代的跆拳道是结合当代东亚武技之长的韩国发源武术运动之一。
