It's never easy to start a tournament with a loss, especially when you were in a winning position but lost because of touch-move mistake

But Jui Cen didn't let that mistake affect him, he stayed calm and bounced back strongly, winning 5 games in a row to finish 3rd place in the MMU Chess Cup U12 category! 🥉👏

I was proud of him and praised him after the tournament. Not just for the result, but for how he handled the setback.

His mum also shared with me that he used to get quite emotional whenever he lost a game. But seeing him slowly learn to handle losses better, control his emotions and keep fighting is a really meaningful improvement, which his mum is really happy about

You might lose a game, but the tournament is not over. Keep learning and fighting. Well done, Jui Cen! 👏

Recently, Ryan had a difficult tournament game where his opponent played an opening he wasn't familiar with. As the game went on, he got into a bad position, he lost a bishop under time pressure and eventually lost the game.

For many young kids, one tough loss is enough to affect the rest of the tournament.

But Ryan didn't let that happen.

He stayed focused, kept fighting in the remaining rounds, and earned himself 2nd place in the Kluang Rapid Chess Tournament U12 boys category. Congratulations! 🎉👏

Sometimes things don't go our way. We make mistakes, face setbacks. What's important is not staying down, but getting back up and giving our best again.

I'm proud of Ryan, he showed resilience and fighting spirit throughout the tournament.

Before this tournament, Zyler had lost to the same opponent twice. Many young players would become afraid and lose confidence when facing the same opponent again

But this time, instead of thinking about his previous losses, he focused on the position in front of him. Zyler didn't rush his moves. He calculated carefully and trusted his thinking

This was Ryan's second appearance at MSSM

Before MSSM started, Ryan was training hard and consistently. In less than 2 weeks, he increased his online rating from 2000 to 2200🔥 and happily shared his achievement with his coach

Travelling to Sarawak without his parents, adapting to a new environment, and competing at the national level was never going to be easy

But Ryan stayed focused and gave his best in every game

Every player wants results immediately.

But chess improvement doesn't work that way.

This is Rosini's third appearance at MSSM. Her first two attempts (2023 & 2024) ended without a medal, but she continued to work hard, stayed committed to her training, and came back stronger every year🔥

This year, all that hard work finally paid off.

Rosini and her team won the Silver Medal in the MSSM U15 Girls Team Event🥈🎉

Chess is not a sprint. It's a marathon

Proud of my student Carlina! 🎉

She started joining my beginner chess class in March 2025 with very little tournament experience. Through consistent training and hard work, her understanding and confidence in chess improved a lot over time

Today, she has successfully qualified for MSSM representing Sarawak👏🔥

She joined MSSB before in 2024 (before started lesson with me) and finished around 102nd place, but this year she came back much stronger🔥

During the tournament, she also showed amazing fighting spirit and finished strongly with 6 consecutive wins despite 2 losses in 2nd and 3rd round👏

Really proud to see how far she has come in just over a year. The journey is still long, but this is definitely a big milestone for her. Now we continue preparing for national level!

Double Champion from the Same Family 🏆🏆

As a coach, it’s always nice to see siblings who learn together, motivate each other, compete, and grow together

This year, both of them did something really special

Huge congratulations to Reanne for becoming Champion in MSSD Kluang with a perfect 10/10 score! 🏆💪 Such a dominating performance from start to finish

And her brother Ryan also became Champion in the U12 Boys category with an impressive 8.5/9 👏

Two champions from the same family…very impressive

But more than the results, what makes me proud is their effort behind the scenes, and their mindset. Always willing to learn, always hardworking, always hungry to improve

Hopefully they can continue this momentum into the state level competition🔥 Last year they both qualified to the national level

It started with a tough Day 1

Jui Cen lost a game that he was actually winning. After that, he felt very down… kept thinking about his mistakes and couldn’t accept the loss. It’s always tough to come back from losing, especially for young players

As a chess player myself, I really understand that feeling. So I just told him to relax, rest well, and don’t put too much pressure on himself

The next day, he came back more calm and focused, he slowly found his rhythm again, and even beat the top seed (someone he had beaten before) 💪

From that one painful loss… he managed to come back strong and finish 🥉 3rd place in MSSD Muar Boys U12

Really proud of you, Jui Cen. Not just the result, but your fighting spirit and mindset 👍

Let me share a small story about my student, Ryan Shee

“Coach, can I play a game with you?” this little boy will always ask after almost every of our private lessons 😄

While most students might feel a bit scared to play with their coach… he’s the opposite. He enjoys the challenge, because he wants to learn.

So we played… and over time, from our online battles, he scored quite good against me 👀

But what makes me even prouder is his attitude towards learning.
“Coach, can you help me to analyze my games?” is another question he always asks

He likes to learn from his own games, be it online or tournament games… sometimes even training games with his sister (also another strong player from the same family).

That mindset… always reflecting, always improving. That curiosity and hunger to improve, that’s what truly creates a champion.

And today, all that effort paid off

One of my students used to do quite well during lessons, but during actual games, he often lost or drew winning positions. When I helped him analyze his games, he would say things like,
“I didn’t see that move” or “I thought I was winning, but then I blundered.”

So I went through his own games with him step by step, not just pointing out mistakes, but helping him understand:

Why a move was risky
What his opponent was planning / trying to do
What better options he had

After a few weeks, he started to:

Think more carefully before moving (less blunders)
Spot simple tactics he used to miss
Feel more confident during games

That’s the power of game analysis — learning from their own games, not just theory.

I’ll be offering a Game Analysis Program to help your kids improve faster 😊

How it works:

I will analyze your child’s games from:

Our weekend practice games
Their online games (Chess.com / Lichess.)
Or even their physical tournament games ♟️

I will guide them on:

What they were thinking vs what actually happened
Mistakes and missed opportunities
Better moves and simple ideas they can use next time

This is suitable for students from Elementary up to Advanced levels, especially those who are serious about improving their games

Schedule:
Every Saturday 4-5 pm starting 25 April
RM 60 per month for 4 sessions
