We often get asked which cenote is safest for diving, and to that we say…

When it comes to Cenote Diving, it’s less about one specific Cenote being safer than another and more about practicing SAFE DIVING PRACTICES.

Safety Tips for Cenote Diving include…

🐠 Staying within the limits of natural light

🐠 Staying within 60m/200 linear ft from an opening

🐠 Staying under the maximum depth of 70ft/21 meters

🐠 Carrying at least one light per diver

🐠 Making sure all of your gear is secured and nothing is dangling freely

🐠 Adhering to the rule of thirds for air consumption: ensure your tank has 1/3 for the way in, 1/3 for the way out and 1/3 in reserve, and

The #1 way to ensure a safe cenote diving experience is…

🤿 Hire a guide, follow their guidelines and ensure that there are no more than 4 of you on the tour per guide present — all of which we’d be happy to help you with!

Did you know that coral reefs are endangered? 😱

‘Corals are particularly vulnerable to the effect of human activities including polution, climate change, sedimentation and fishing.’

Here’s some amazing 🤩 facts about Coral Reefs that may mobilize you to join the conversation around protecting them…

🐠 Corals are classified as diverse groups of invertebrate animals, and colonies of them join together over thousands of years to create a reef

🐠 Some of the coral reefs on the planet began growing as far back as 50 million years

🐠 Coral reefs cover less than 1% of the ocean floor and support 25% of all marine creatures — with over 25 coral species listed as threatened or endangered

🐠 Coral reefs hold significant cultural value for coastal communities around the world — including indiginous communities in Australia and Hawaii

🐠 Coral reefs play a valuable role in the defense from storms and flooding — reducing total wave height by an average 84% (essentially without them the annual damages from flooding would double)

When it comes to protecting Coral Reefs, the process goes hand in hand with protecting mother earth — with recycling and emmission reduction at the top of the list!

Here’s a couple of things that you can do when diving/snorkeling a reef, to ensure you’re not harming them:

🤿 Avoid touching reefs or anchoring your boat on the reef when you’re snorkeling or diving — this can damage delicate coral or even kill them.

🤿 Stop wearing sunscreen/sunblock in the ocean — because corals are not capable of moving, sediments can settle directly on top of them and smotther them.

Tulum’s 🇲🇽 Coral reef is a part of the Mesoamerican Reef, the second largest reef in the world — stretching accross Mexico, Belize, Guatemala and Honduras.

We’re boastful when it comes to our Underwater Adventure guides, because they are the best in town! 🤩

Meet Kris, she’s been diving with us since July 2023…

‘Hi, my name is Kristin, I’m a PADI instructor and local cavern guide. I’m originally from Boston, MA and have been based in Tulum for 2 years.

My diving journey first began in 2009, when I completed my Open Water course while studying Marine Biology in college.

Since then, scuba diving has allowed me to work many exciting jobs across the globe, such as being an aquarium diver in San Diego, CA, a purser on a liveaboard boat in Australia, and a divemaster in Koh Tao, Thailand.

I became an instructor in February 2020 and have been working full time as a dive professional ever since. Upon moving to Tulum, I instantly fell in love with cavern and cave diving.

Getting cave certified has been the most challenging and rewarding scuba experience thus far! This course also prepared me for cavern guiding confidently and safely.

The caverns of the Riviera Maya are such a unique environment, full of fascinating geological formations and breathtaking light displays.

I would love to share the wonder of diving in Tulum with you. Reach out now to book your tour with me through Flying Fish Tulum Dive Shop!’
