Diver by Design is my approach to diver training. Diving is my hobby, but teaching is my passion.

I have a science and engineering background, so the equipment and dive theory for technical diving really appeals to me. As a sidemount focused instructor, I can see what configuration changes might be needed and how they will impact the diver. I have been sharing my knowledge with others throughout my professional career and as a dive instructor, I have the chance to combine my passion for teachi

ng with my love of diving. I love to see students immerse themselves in the training and to watch them make improvements on every dive. I get genuine pleasure when helping a student master a difficult skill or a complex part of dive theory.

I have one open space on a Side Mount Scuba Diving - Steve Martin Sidemount Essentials course during September. The dates are not yet fixed but will be in the window between the 19th and 27th September.

This 5-day program improves all of a diver's skills, combining the "Essentials" with Sidemount. You can see more about that at www.sidemounting.com.

We sequence the days with an overall format, but we vary the skill level and tasks so that we cater to all levels of diver.

We focus on the way a diver controls themselves, and we work on precision buoyancy, holding good trim, and having a good variety of finning techniques as well as increased awareness and general positioning.

You will find that the Sidemount gets quite easy when the general comfort level is good and the in-water control is there.

There are lots of theoretical things to get into, and we cover the most important ones around cylinders, their setup, the harness, and its sizing. We also look at how and why a cylinder stays on the body and how to make it adaptable for multiple types of entry and exits. We also cover some typical failures like regs, valves, cylinders and bungees breaking.

The course is open to all certified divers holding an AOW certification.

Back on Open Circuit to take Sidemount Society to the P29 in Malta for some of the sidemount friendly parts of this awesome wreck.

We had a small issue as this was the day that Ċirkewwa Marine Park was having the car park re-surfaced - so a bit of extra walking to the shore - but luckily with sidemount we have options ;-)

The wreck is "shallow" enough for a long bottom time when you are decompression trained and this allows for plenty of time to enjoy everything.

Great to dive with an excellent sidemount diver and really get to work on the wreck!

This season I am working to put more hours on my FATHOM Dive Systems Gemini - for learning, for fun and also to prepare for an event being held in Malta later this year.

Last week I dived for 11 hours over 5 days with my personal CCR assistant, SUMP UK , who was in Malta diving the new S7 unit.

Each day I made adjustments to the setup and finished feeling pretty well hooked up.

This video is a mash up of the sites in Gozo we dived.
