Equinox Adventure

Equinox Adventure The new home of Equinox Adventure The Equinox Adventure Racing Team was formed after almost 20 years of being the Equinox Rally Team.

Back then (1980's and 90's) we did auto rallies using roads and maps, now we have advanced(?) to running, riding, rappelling and kayaking in the backcountry, but still using maps! We started Adventure Racing in 2002 and the team has grown from 2 members back then to 6 main members today. We can now enter races and field a team when some members are taking a break. Our strength is generally navigat

ion with most of the team having a good understanding of topo maps and reading the terrain from them. We like to think of ourselves as always racing for fun. If we have a good day we can do well and perhaps get on the podium (not often, but it has happened). We enjoy teaching others about the sport and because of that we organize a few events each year in the San Diego area and Baja Norte. Please Like us and become a friend to keep track of what we are up to.

Equinox Mission Bay AR Results

The race consisted of a 4 mile kayak followed by a 13 mile bike, and a 3-4 mile run.

The kayak was from DeAnza Cove over to Ski Beach on Vacation Isle then to Fiesta Island and back. The bike required taking the road up Balboa Ave to Tecolote Canyon, down to the Golf Course then through the housing to another entrance to Tecolote where there was some single track over toward Genesee Ave. Racers then transitioned to a run using a picture map of the Mesa College campus and surrounding canyons. It was urban orienteering through the campus and then racing in the canyons and via the creek and drainage ditch back under Genesee to the TA. The last section came down Tecolote Canyon to Mission Bay and back to the start line at De Anza Cove.

We have no firm date for any races next year, though the annual Peaks and Valleys race will be the last weekend in March or the first weekend in April. We need to wait to be after the rains but before it gets too hot.

Jen and Michael DuBois are planning a race in the North County sometime in 2014 and Blake Hudson will likely put on a race in Orange County. There are also plans for a race in the Long Beach area.

Equinox - Mission Bay Adventure Race

Sunday, December 8. Maps and Instructions handed out at 8:30 AM. Start 9:00 AM. Start finish is at De Anza Cove at the NE corner of Mission Bay.

The race should take 4-6 hours. It consists of a Water section, Bike section and Run section. For the water you can use kayak, canoe, paddleboard, SUP or surfboard. We are encouraging those who have kayaks and canoes to share, by allowing another team to start in your craft while you charge off, to do the Bike and Run section, then you finish with the water section. If there are not enough kayaks there is an option to bike and get the water checkpoints. The placement of water checkpoints is slanted so that fast biking will be about as quick as paddling. For those with boards there are less checkpoints so that you too should take about the same time to get the checkpoints.

You need to take your running gear with you on the bike. At an undisclosed location on the bike course you will do a run/orienteering course. The bike checkpoints must be done in sequence and when you get to one of the locations (not told to you ahead of time), there will be a worker to give additional information about the run section. The rules of travel are given out with the instructions and maps at 8:30 AM.

As will all Equinox races, this is FREE, you pay nothing, you win nothing. We do this for fun.

We no longer have a web page for signup, so please let us know if you plan on coming, by replying to this email, that way we will have enough maps and instructions for everyone. Please encourage your friends to come try it.
