On Monday our team completed Region 2. Collectively we had covered 9,000kms through Latin America and the Andes in 8 weeks.

We are now enjoying the stunning landscape of the Pampas - Chile, then Argentina, before heading deep south to the last unspoilt continent on Earth - Antarctica. Two members of our team have run races in Antarctica, and it’ll be of tremendous emotional value when we get there again, even in a virtual sense.

Nobody in our team has fallen off a cliff. In fact, everyone seems to be getting stronger and more positive, with half of the team still warming up. They are most likely aiming for negative splits. There are undoubtedly minor setbacks, but we rarely hear of them. With the rest of us, we know we’re stuck with this race until the end. So why not enjoy it as much as possible?!

Our team has been in the global top 10 for a while, but the leading team is ahead of us by a whole region, about 3,000 miles! Incredible effort indeed. However this race is not about rankings. It’s about getting something really hard done together as a team, waking up everyday and raring to go in high spirit rain or shine, during a time that, safe to say, is not the best for most of us. It’s about going through the lows with the conviction that the highs will come. It’s about going through the highs with gratitude and zest for life.

If you’re cheering us on from Oceania, hopefully you’ve been taking advantage of the spring weather and found time to move about a little bit. As for Melburnians, how good does it feel to get stuck in traffic jams again?

Our thoughts are with our friends in North America, parts of Europe and other regions, who are going through an incredibly difficult time. Chin up. It will pass.

👋 I’m Koleighne Ford from Canterbury, NZ - southernmost member of Team CRAWlers. A tardy introduction on a weird weekend: was supposed to be in Rakiura (Stewart Is.) racing - thanks Covid - Plan C for the holiday was Lake Ohau (love the 🏔) - currently the village is burning 😢. Just gonna stay home.

I’ve been running since I learned that was the only way to keep up with Dad on the farm. Progressed to accidentally-on-purpose missing the school bus (drove Mum mad), loved cross country at school and fell into multi sport and adventure racing after learning to kayak at school. XPD Tasmania and the final 2 full length Southern Traverse on the West Coast NZ are 3 stand out races. I learned to navigate, suffer, walk really fast, and the importance of mental strength.

Ultra running is the most time-effective way for me to feed my soul. Sandwiched between kids and parents, I often find myself running home from work in the middle of the night just to hang out with myself.

Looking forward to getting to know these crazy runners in my team a little better ... imagine if we could organise a finish line run together somewhere??? 🏃‍♀️😍🏔

Well overdue runner introduction.

Hi, I’m Fleur, from Melbourne (France if you dig a bit deeper).

I have never been athletic and first started running in my late twenties to lose weight. Didn’t really lose the weight but got hooked to running especially long distance. My first race was Melbourne marathon and I kept building from there. Over the years running became a habit, now it’s like brushing my teeth and entirely part of my daily routine.

Although most of my runs are on road, I love trail running. But to be totally honest and I am happy to run on any surface in any weather, alone or with company, for a jog or a speed workout. Running is my me time, my meditation, a significant part of my social life, let’s say running means a lot to me.

Being a busy mum working full time, I do not have a lot of opportunities to participate in events, I carefully choose a handful of races a year and go with it. I do not have a competitive nature but rather love challenging myself. The harder it gets the better it feels afterward. Saying that, I haven’t run anything too crazy so far and I am thrilled to be part of team CRAWlers with so many inspiring legends. My challenge for the year will be to try to keep up with my amazing teammates!

I really hope you will also find some inspiration in this group to keep up running and fit.

Hello CRAWlers and followers. How great is today? Melbournians are now allowed out for two hours a day and although most of the team found creative ways to use their home/yard/office I was very excited to get on a trail today (and had a day off so extra bonus). Appreciate every step we’re making towards a safer place to live and getting to the virtual finish line. xox

Our team is pausing for a well-earned rest about 10kms away from the border crossing into Guatemala 🎉 We are enjoying a traditional set lunch of (aptly named) comida corrida, which includes a bowl of soup, grilled or fried meat, and rice or a salad. The Gulf of Mexico is behind us, and we will be running with the ocean to our right until we get to Panama. After 2 weeks covering nearly 2,000kms, we are half way through Region 1.

The team is in good mood and reasonably healthy, with just a few minor injuries. We are warming up nicely.

It’s time for our second runner introduction this week.

Hi, I’m Duc Do, from Melbourne.

I run everywhere, and if you are slow enough, you probably have seen me everywhere too. I am usually way back of the pack. As my running mate Kirsten Maplestone put it eloquently in her last post, we call it “value for money”.

Seven years ago, I could not run out 2kms. But 1,500-2,000 pills of antibiotics were taking their toll on my body and mental state. Forced to work on my fitness, I chose running because it was the only sports I would never imagine myself doing.

I think that all forms of running are beautiful, whether it’s on trail, on road, on track, or around the couch at home. They teach the runner different things, and bring about different forms of enjoyment. The lack of health did introduce me to running, but it was nature and culture that have sustained my running adventures. Most places I’ve run in are simply wonderful. If I must reluctantly call out the standouts, they are at the North Pole, Union Glacier (close to the South Pole), our very own backyard - the Simpson Desert, and Tahoe.

These days, I run just for the heck of it. It’s part of what I do. The friendships, the trails, the challenges, the cultural journeys - they are wonderful bonuses.

The thing that is really cool about Team CRAWlers is that everyone makes me want to be a better person, whether they smash their daily goals with ease or struggle to make up enough kilometres. I know half of the team well, but have not even sat down for a coffee with a few. Yet we feel like a little family, urging one another on through each week with light banter and silliness. That’s the power of the running spirit. It brings us together, and reminds us that it’s never too late to start a new journey.

I hope that our CRAW journey is entertaining and beneficial to you too.

Each week we will introduce you a team member. This week is Kirsten Maplestone

Hi my name is Kirk from Melbourne 🦄 🍍 🌈

I’m not your average runner. In fact, I’m below average in speed but I make up for that in stupid distances, fun and weird outfits. Who says you can’t have fun at the back of the pack?

Whether you run 5km or 200 miles I think everyone is amazing. Don’t be afraid to come last because you’re slow. That used to be me. Always embarrassed. Always apologetic. Always ashamed. Now I own it. I’ve since had the most amazing finishes coming in the last spot and I’m damn proud of what I’ve achieved. The most memorable being Big Red Run, Grand to Grand Ultra, Tahoe 200 and Delirious West.

But for me it’s not all about the race. What I Iove is the heart melting, caring people that I find and tons of memories. Memories that I’ve missed dearly but grateful to have. I’ll admit I’ve struggled in this new covid world but this CRAWlers team have inspired me to pull myself back together and back out the door again.

I hope you enjoy following our journey and feel inspired to do something you love. I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis three years ago, so don’t ever let anyone say you can’t do something....never quit until you say you’re done.

I hope to see you all on the trails real soon (once it’s safe again). Until then I’m sending virtual hugs to you all. xox

Yesterday our team started from the border of Texas and Mexico, with passports issued by the Federal Republic of Antarctica.

Crawling on highways, some of us caught sight of this sprawling power plant. We had corn for breakfast. We also had corn for lunch and dinner. There will be more corn, and nothing but corn over 10 days or so, after which we will crawl into Guatemala.

After 1 day, nobody has DNF’ed yet 💪🏿

Our main rival team Sunset Crew is still looking for 2 crazy runners. Get in fast, and give them a slight chance at beating our team CRAWlers 😂
