Spotted on today’s surface interval: this beautiful starfish was just hanging out on the sandy bottom at El Cielo, the most famous natural cove in Cozumel.

Starfish play an important role in the local ecosystem. They help keep reef life in balance and are a sign of healthy waters. That’s why we always admire them from a distance and leave them exactly where they belong.

If you’ve been dreaming about warm water, colorful reefs, and unforgettable marine life, this is your sign. Come dive Cozumel with us and see it all for yourself: drift dives, coral gardens, turtles, rays... and maybe even a starfish or two.

Cozumel is home to the well-known C53 Felipe Xicoténcatl, but also to two more fascinating shipwrecks: the retired Mexican Navy vessels PC321 Lago de Pátzcuaro and P74 Laguna de Mandinga. In June 2006, both ships were sunk purposedly off Casitas Beach in downtown Cozumel in an effort to create artificial reefs.

The steel-hulled Lago de Pátzcuaro was built in Mexico City in 1961 and started as the F14 Albatros Class Riverine Patrol Boat. Its name and classification changed several times over its career, finally becoming PC321 Lago de Pátzcuaro in 2001. At 10 meters long and displacing 18.5 tons, it was crewed by 5 and powered by a single Caterpillar engine for a top speed of 8 knots. Notably, it wasn't equipped with any mounted weaponry.

The Laguna de Mandinga was built in 1960 in Acapulco. This 20.5-meter-long, 4.5-meter-wide patrol boat began its service as the Polimar-class F05 Aspirante José V. Rincon. It also changed names several times until it finally became P74 Laguna de Mandinga in 2001. This coastal patrol boat sported two 456 horsepower diesel engines for a top speed of 16 knots. Equipped with small arms and a bow-mounted Browning M2 .50 caliber machine gun, it patrolled the waters around Isla Mujeres.
