Sammy's first holiday.
Sammy- Somethings up with mom and dad. They are acting real scary. They whisper when they think I am not listening and use words like vacation, holiday, off island Aunt Joan. Uugh, does that mean that little fury night mare called Oliver is coming back to pester me or take my place? I will just have to be vigilant and have a backup plan because if they are thinking of trading me in I am sure one of my many aunts or uncles would have room for me. What did I ever do to make it on the disposal list? I will just have to wait and see.

January 3
Aunt Joan arrived and thank Christ there was no yappy fur ball. Things seem like normal but there is this electricity in the air and I just can't seem to make sense of it. Mom and Joan stay up late drinking wine and talking about strange things that I have never herd of before. Best to keep low profile and see what happens.

January 5
After 2 days of running around getting moms car all fixed up for a road trip as they call it something went wrong and we are shuttled In a big hurry to catch a ferry. Now many times in the past mom and dad where dropped off at the ferry terminal and I had to watch them walk away and leave me for hours on end. How can I take care of them when they leave me for extended periods of time. Well this time Dad put a leash on me and I was going with them. oh no it has started and I want no part of it. I sat on the ground and tried my best to stop this but to no avail. Dad just picked me up and carried me across the road. Then he sat me down, assured me that everything was O.K. and I was a good boy and asked for my co operation to make life easy and fun for all. Not having much say in it I decided it was better to walk freely then to be dragged by the neck so onward we go. I have been on dad's boat many times and I liked it but this monster made dads look like a toy. Lot's of funny people wearing funny costumes greeting people and sending them in all directions, a lot of clinging and clanging and then dad brought me to a elevated metal ramp and started to go on it. I resisted but a little pull on the collar and gentle boot on my but and across the great divide I ran. As soon as we crossed there was a steep set of metal stairs to climb and I just decided to go for it pulling the leash out of dad's hand and flying up the stairs. I could
distinctly hear a curse coming from dad's mouth so I waited at the top for mom dad and aunt Joan to get up. After everyone got settled into their seats I made it perfectly clear that I was not going to stay on the cold steel floor so after a little push and shove I garnered a seat on dad's lap. The big boat started to move and it was not long before everyone was rocking back and forth and up and down. The people in funny suits banged around the isles handing out doggy bags to numerous individuals but I did not see any other dogs? After what seemed like forever the boat came to a stop and we all got off but not the same way we entered. This is when I realized that there were hundreds of people inside the boat and we all had to wait our turn to exit. Dad got it right this time and gave me extended leash on the ramp which made it easy to run off. As Mom, Dad, Aunt Joan and I walked down the long concrete walk way with the sun beating down from the crystal clear blue sky I thought what could be bad about this. Dad was laughing and started some kind of jig as he spewed out some kind of nonsense about off to see the wizard. I sure hope he is O.K.

We walked through a building that came out to a area where everything was in a frenzy. Men with straight faces in multi colored cloths holding long pointy metal things and big dogs who would not even acknowledge me on a canine wave length moved freely between the masses of people. Men with placards in their hands screaming about taxis, tours, best price but we walked right past them all. Moved along up a incline to a big place with all kinds of glitzy stores and a terrible bumpy walk way. I had to concentrate on my walking so as not to slip but I was not alone as my trio of captors also commented on the walking. Once we hit a street with cars dad suddenly turned left while Mom and Joan hailed me away to the right. Just when I was getting settled they threw a monkey wrench into the day. It was short lived and just when Mom, Joan and I had found a open restaurant to get food dad showed up in a white car honking the horn and screaming about not being able to park for whatever reason. So we paid or bill, dragged the 4 bags up the road and piled into the car. It was still very early but there was some issue about getting out of Playa before the heavy traffic so dad took off and we all had breakfast in the back seat of the car.

Now I have had may car rides on Cozumel but I had never seen any thing like this. We travelled faster than I have every been passing other cars and trucks on this multi lane road way and just when I thought we were the fastest car some blurr would pass us as if we had stopped. At any rate dad seemed happy as he seemed proud to get to some place called Cancun in 37 minutes. We slowed down and drove along this beautiful road lined with coconut tress and hotels of every imaginable shape and size. Some one mentioned Kukulkan boulevard and after some real mellow travel time we pulled into a parking lot just in time for me to make a deposit and water some trees.

Uncle Paul appeared from out of no where and in a very short period of time we went from driving in a car to getting on another boat. This boat was way smaller then dad's but we could all fit in it there was just not enough seats for everyone. So I the dog and dad the chauffer had to sit on the floor while the ladies and uncle Paul took the seats. It was really exciting to be on the water and after a grand tour of some bridge they are building and the many coves as they are called Paul declared it was water ski time. This was unique for me as I had never heard of water ski before. Dad got to sit in a seat behind the steering wheel while Paul put some long shoes on and jumped into the water. Paul had a stick in his hand attached to a rope which was attached to the back of the boat. After some yelling back and forth mom cried hit it and the sleeping little boat roared to life and sprang into action like the Iquana I chase in the back yard. Not being ready for it I did a full head flip roll from the front of the boat to the back no harm done but my ego was bruised. At any rate looking out the back of the boat there was uncle Paul weaving back and forth on the funny shoes on top of the water. After several minutes of this he let go of the line, the boat slowed down, turned around and picked him up. Now apparently it was mom's turn and this what the whole day was about. Mom use to ski but it had been 25 years since the last time. On many past visits Paul and her had talked about it and she wanted to do it again. So this whole day was around a ski day for mom and here I thought they were trying to get rid of me. Well enough of that the problem now is I do not think mom should do this either did dad. Aunt Joan was on the fence but Paul coaxed her into it and next thing we know mom is in the water with the stick in her hand and the rope tied to the boat. After some negotiations between Paul at the wheel and mom in the water the lion was unleashed and mom started to come up on her shoes but only briefly as she let go of the stick and fell back down. Paul slowed down and circled so that mom could get the stick again and they had a discussion about going to slow and maybe using some kind of training bar but in the end mom had it her way and once again we where lined up to go. This time mom got up wobbled a little and then fell down very quickly, once again we slowed down circled and had a discussion. Dad and Joan tried to coax mom out of the water but she insisted to try one more time. She mad it very clear that she was use to a fast pull up and Paul was going to slow. Paul was not use to this type of attitude so he just nodded his head and kind of agreed. Stick in hand, rope with all slack out, mom giving the go sign and up roared the lion. Something seemed to be in sink until mom just let go and screamed oh f**k. Apparently some where along the stress mom had a pop in her thigh and searing pain. After we pulled her out aunt Joan who use to be a nurse gave her a once over and that was the end to our water ski expedition. All new for me but looking painful for mom.

We left Uncle Paul at the marina and headed to our hotel that mom booked for us in Cancun. Apparently it had to be dog friendly so that I could stay with them. It took some time do do what they call check in but eventually we had a key and entrance privileges. I have been in a elevator at aunt Ann's place when we go to visit Utzie but I have never been in a elevator with so many other dogs. I did not know what to do every direction I turned there was a golden colored dog looking back at me. Mom and Joan laughed at me but it was no joke. Dad tried to get me to smell the other dog but there was something funny about all of them as they had no scent. It took 2 or 3 rides in the elevator before I realized it was something called mirrors and that good looking hunk of dog was me. At any rate mom was not feeling to good so dad went out and got chicken wings and we all ate together in the hotel AH room while all the crazies ran around the Hard Rock area of the Cancun strip. Dad remarked that dog friendly just meant deeper pockets. He said it was $145.00 a night for 3 adults and then $50.00 a night for a dog. Well I didn't have to sleep in the car. So ends day one of my first holiday. Now I know what a Holiday is I can't wait for tomorrow.
