The Canaries had marked the night of San Juan as the last night of the year, arriving next to the early morning a new year and therefore, plagued by customs, spells and rites to call the rain, good harvest, love, fertility And good luck.

With the summer solstice, the ancient aborigines of the Canary Islands welcomed the new year in an ancestral celebration in the agricultural calendar that, over the years and the arrival of new cultures to the SHA Archipelago launched at night of San Juan.

Foundation of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria
The capital of Gran Canaria was founded on June 24, 1478, at which time the captain of the crown of Castile, Juan Rejon, began the conquest of the island. Although it supposed the death of a large number of aborigines, they fought to prevent Spaniards from becoming the territory, the city continues to use that date as the date of foundation of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.

Juan Rejón installed in these dates, 543 years ago, a camp next to the mouth of the ravine of the guiniguada. This logistics base was the germ of which, little later, became the first city founded by the Crown of Castile in the Atlantic.
