Chicatanas: A Oaxacan culinary tradition!
These flying ants 🐜 (chicatanas) only come once a year and they always come with the first heavy rain 🌧. To gather chicatanas you must wake up at 4 in the morning (if you are lucky they will be everywhere, massive flying ants marching all over especially where there is light). We took our bagful to Abuela’s house so she can make a feast. Abuela 👵🏼 has been cooking chicatanas all her life—just like her grandmother, and all those grandmas all the way back to the pre-Hispanic times—back to when it was just the Zapotecas living in Oaxaca. 🌧🐜👵🏼❤️🇲🇽

This story is from my own observation as I have lived in Puerto Escondido Oaxaca, and I am married to a local, for many years... my kids are true Oaxacan-Chicatana-Gathering-Champs. I admittedly can not and will not touch or eat them, just because picking up flying ants and eating them is kinda weird to me! But I am fascinated by this culture!
