: Pared Verde

This is a deep dive site, with max depth of 29m. Typically we float along with the current along the wavy wall, taking shelter in some of the alcoves to look for eels and lobsters. Sometimes at this dive site we can see turtles flying by, and in the winder months we might even run into an eagle ray or bull shark!

: Cueva del Pargo

One of our dive guide’s favorite shallow reefs, cueva del Pargo is an excellent reef for both beginners and macro photographers. With a max of 12 meters and usually little to no current, this reef offers a bunch of triggering types of coral, and is actually broken down into two parts with a surprise in the middle (swipe through the photos to see!). Cueva del Pargo is located in the northern reefs of Playa del Carmen.

Similar to shangri la, but at the same time very different. This reef holds something magical every dive. Though very unusual to see, we’ve seen devil rays here, golden tail morays, and chain morays. More commonly you can find turtles, squid, trunk fish, trumpet fish, and there is plenty of small hiding places to keep macro lovers happy with sexy shrimp, arrow crabs, and more!

Shangri La

Shangri La is another shallow dive site located in the North section of Playa del Carmen. With a max depth of 10m and very little current, Shangri La is perfect for beginners, but also macro lovers as well!

It is a fairly flat reef with some 3 foot high banks, and hiding under the banks you can sometimes find nurse sharks and moray eels. This reel also has a sandy section off to the side where we can keep an eye out for sting rays. Being a shallow reef, it’s a great spot for Caribbean Squid, and small creatures such as arrow crabs and juvenile fish.

: Jardines

Jardines is another shallow reef (12m max) located in the northern end of Playa del Carmen. Similar to Moc Che, it has some small walls and slopes of reef, mostly a straight shot.

What we love about Jardines is there’s some big schools of fish that like to hang out on top of the reef! You can often also find trumpet fish, eels, and if you’re lucky some stone fish hiding on the second part of the reef! There’s also a circular tube in the sand midway through the reef, and here you can usually find some Bermuda Chubs hanging out!

Fantastic site to dive at night and look for octopus, sometimes we also see turtles and stingrays here too!

: Moc Che

Moc Che is a tranquil, shallow dive site (12m max) found on the north side of PDC.

This site has a sloping reef that we usually take on the left side. During the winter months, this one is a favorite as if you’re lucky you can see eagle rays! Near the end of the dive site you also have a large arch to swim through, parting the seas of the fishes that hang out underneath.

Some things you can usually find on the dive site include lobsters, moray eels (there are a few who live here!), drum fish, and small schools of fishes.

: Shark Point

Because it’s that time of year, might as well start off our dive site series with a bang! Shark point is located in Playa del Carmen and is so named for the fact that during the winter months this is where we see the most bull sharks!

Located at 25m, this dive site is reserved for divers with their advanced certification, or minimum open water+deep+25 dives. Some days the current is very tranquil and other days it can rip you sideways if you are not holding on to the rope! This dive site features a sandy bottom with a few rocks here and there (keep an eye out for eels!) and is most known for the bull sharks, though we can often find stingrays here as well!

Winding down our with Cenote Yaakun
is an incredible deep cenote located in the south of Playa del Carmen. New to the cenote list, it has quickly become one of our favorites.

This is a wide open, pit like cenote that features a cloud at about 24m, several gigantic and tall stalactites, plus a “beach” with called branches to explore. If you are a cave diver, we can also take a visit below the cloud to a world of brilliant white walls, blue water, and more sunken trees where we can often find the white lady fish.

Come play in the cloud with us!

Cenote Zapote - aka Hell’s Bells

To the divers who have visited with us here before, we often get requests to go back time and time again. Cenote Zapote is unlike any other cenote we have listed so far. It is kind of shaped like an elongated hourglass, with room for swimming up on the surface, to going down a narrow “tunnel’, and at dive depth a wide open and beautiful cavern filled with bell shaped formations.

What makes this cenote unique is that the bells are still growing with time. Though scientific research is still being performed on these speleothems, they are thought to have been made by underwater carbonate deposits are and may form through biological and physical-chemical processes.

This dive has a max depth of 30m, and is reserved for divers with experience and very good buoyancy as the formations are very precious.

What else is there to say other than Maravilla really is a Maravilla
Next on our is Cenote Maravilla

Known to scuba divers and free divers alike, this cenote is famous for its wide open pit like cavern and glorious sun rays, which at the right time of the day shoot right down the middle of the cenote.

is a cenote for advanced divers as we often go down to the hydrogen sulfide cloud down at 30m. While the calling of this cenote is definitely the view of the light, keep an eye out on the walls for imprints of shells and also a few stalactites near the top of the cenote. On a lucky day you may even spot a turtle stunning itself on the surface of the cenote!
