Baja Norte loop drive: https://tinyurl.com/bajaloop-notes (includes a google map and lots of info!)

A good friend asked us: what's a good route for a day trip from LA for some good food and nice scenery? So we put together a loop map for her and here is a deluxe version with lots links and notes for YOU too! Get to the border by mid-morning and this loop will take you to our favorite spots in Mexico and have you home by moonrise.

BAJA NORTE DRIVING LOOP Day trip - everything you need to know https://tinyurl.com/bajanorte-daytrip Make sure you have: US cash ($ in small bills is fine, you don't need pesos) for tolls, shopping & eating. Every place on this map accepts US cash but they hate to hand out change, so small bills...

We're so excited about the Sandiego Reader cover story about skating in Northern Baja! Hey, hey, look at this sweet photo by SoulcaptorMedia of Natalie Krishna Das tearing up our bowl during our last 2-day, 2-DIY contest!

Seriously, though, please pick up a copy, it's a super great article that touches on a lot of Northern Baja skateboarding history. We're so honored to be included. They used a bunch of photos from George and it's readable online, too. The link will be in the first comment!

Stoked to get the cover of 🥹😻🤩. Huge thanks to Mike Madriaga for the interview. for the epic photos. & & Baja Surf & Skate for the epic experience!! And shout out to my girl Laura Logue for the ride haha. She’s in this zine too!

We also get this a lot: is it safe?

Here is our experience. We've never felt safer on a daily basis than we do at our house in La Mision. We know our neighbors and they know us. Our dogs bark every time someone passes on our road (fortunately not that often) so we get to greet our few neighbors.

People are friendly and nice - strangers and familiar faces, even the teens riding horses past will nod when they look up from their phones.

Guns are rare - in the two years we've lived here we've gotten the impression only actual criminals and military carry guns, and we have never yet seen or had any interaction with any criminals, nor do we have any reason to think we ever will. That impression people have that Northern Mexico is full of narcos? We've seen no evidence of that at all. Our neighborhood is full of ranchers, surfers, artists and farmers. Have you ever noticed how many tv shows on netflix that show Mexico are about drugs? That's TV, not reality. And that kind of TV has given Mexico a terrible and absolutely undeserved reputation. Yes, there are addicts, narcos, drug trade, crooked politicians and for real being a journalist who writes about any of that is an incredibly dangerous profession. But every bit of that exists in the US, as well, and every other country, and our experience is that if you aren't involved with that stuff, it's only barely more real than the vampire s**t *we* like to watch on netflix.

We got pulled over for running a stop sign and didn't get shaken down - we got a warning from a nice cop willing to speak spanish slowly (and now we're super careful because TBH sometimes the stop signs are hard to see). Lesson learned.

To be completely transparent, *one of us* (me) hates driving in the city of Tijuana. Its crowded and the streets are narrow and the traffic is almost always hair-raising. But more than 2 million people live in Tijuana - it's a massive city! - and driving is just awful in big cities! Generally! Well, maybe that's the country person talking. But it's easy enough to cross back and forth without getting caught in TJ and alta SoCal traffic if a little effort is put into it, and there are highways through the city that take people from the border straight out to the beaches if you're equally reluctant to drive crowded urban streets. Generally speaking, driving in Northern Baja is a breeze because there are just a few highways and the escenica (the main one to our place and along the coast) is kept in perfect condition.

Is Mexico safe? I don't know, it's a huge country. But Northern Baja feels just as safe as San Diego if not more so. It really feels like southern ca with just a lot less people.

We just did a big update on our Adventures page of the website, which I will link in the first comment. We created the page when we first moved to La Mision, and it was missing so many fun things to do!

FYI

Abortions and abortion pills have been decriminalized and depenalized officially in Mexico. Safe, legal abortions and abortion pills are available in Tijuana, 45 minutes from our place. Endless racist propaganda may have convinced you that Mexico is "unsafe" but Tijuana hosts world-class medical tourism and people come from all over to be treated here, so disabuse yourself of anything else you may have unwittingly digested otherwise. FTR our little town even hosts a very famous fancy clinic for people who want more options in cancer therapies (like stem cell treatments) that have been outlawed in the US, as well [general cursing about those treatments being outlawed by the same folks who are currently systematically stripping US women's rights away].

Of course medical abortion and the 2-pill abortion is also legal in California (at present).

So if for any reason anyone needs a vacation in Mexico that includes time to rest, recover, drink tea, watch birds and waves and ponder a gorgeous view - or skate, drink margaritas, eat spicy food, BBQ with friends - any or all those things - we have a very quiet AirBNB with a private patio that has a view of the ocean and a cactus with a birds nest... and on the other side of our big stone house, a louder AirBNB with a patio that opens onto a mini ramp and DIY cement pool and lots of friendly dogs to pet and skating to do and activity and distractions.

It's a choose your own adventure or quiet utter relaxing lack of adventure sort of situation. Or take a little from each column. And we offer weekly rates and welcome anyone who needs it.

We were so stoked when Ace Pelka & Chris Russell showed up. They killed our bowl and the mini-ramp, then headed over to Anna's DIY in Ensenada and on down to Cuatro Casas. We've talked about doing a "Skate Tour" thing on AirBNB experiences, and that's pretty much what it would be - only I'd suggest stopping at Manos Sucias in TJ and skating Rojo's crazy backyard pool, too. THEN coming to our place.

The guys made a short video and they got it right. On behalf of the crazy American women who moved to Baja a year ago and built a DIY, they got Baja exactly right - this place is amazing, and you will skate weirder, heavier and funner stuff than you ever could imagine and meet some of the coolest people you could ever know.

Wait, did we forget to mention that we have two apartments ready now??? The newest one is so beautiful, with a gorgeous sunset view of the estuary and the coast, on the quiet side of the house. We are super proud of it because it was a dirt floor room with no windows or doors or anything when we moved in. And now it's super beautiful! Check it out!
