🐠 THE FISH WE DIVE FOR

Divers are a strange bunch. We travel thousands of kilometers, freeze, endure the rocking of the boat, and lug around heavy gear. And all for what? For the chance to encounter fish that we’ll remember for years to come.

Everyone has their own favorite. Some are crazy about manta rays. Some collect encounters with sharks. Some are in love with moray eels, which peek out of their burrows like grumpy retirees. And some are willing to dive for hours just to find a tiny seahorse.

And we take pictures, too. Lots of them. Then we look them over and show them to each other.

🌊 DIVING AND AGE: WHEN TO START AND WHEN TO STOP?

Instructors often hear the question: “Is it too late for me to start diving?” Or, conversely: “Isn’t it too early for a child?” Let’s talk about this

You can start as young as 8 years old. At this age, children are already mature enough to learn to dive using the NDL system. There are special programs designed for them—safe, adapted, and presented in a playful format. And it’s not just entertainment. It builds confidence, discipline, and a lifelong love of the water.

And there’s no upper age limit. If your health allows it, dive at 40, 50, 60, and beyond. Diving is one of the gentlest forms of exercise: the water takes the strain off your joints and spine, your movements become fluid, your body relaxes, and your mind recharges.

Many people take up diving after 40—and stick with it. Some find a new hobby, some find a new career, and some find themselves.

Age isn’t the main thing. What matters most is your desire and your health. Everything else is worked out with your instructor.

The ocean doesn’t care how old you are. It’s just waiting 🤿

🌊 WHAT ARE WE LOOKING FOR AT THE BOTTOM?

We say, “I dive for the silence.” “For the feeling of weightlessness.” “For the peace.” But let’s be honest.

We’re looking for what isn’t found on land. Experiences you can’t buy in a store. Emotions you can’t get at the office. Scenes no movie can capture.

We’re looking for encounters. With a manta ray that glides by like a ghost. With a shark that looks at you and goes on its way. With ourselves—the person who remains when all the noise is stripped away.

We’re looking for confirmation. That the world is bigger than our problems. That the depths aren’t hostile, but indifferent—and therefore peaceful. That we’re part of something immense, and that doesn’t scare us—it soothes us.

Are we looking for meaning? Perhaps. Or maybe we just want to stop being “someone” for 45 minutes and simply become a human being who breathes.

And you know what? We find it. Every time. At different depths. In different seas. But always—where notifications can’t reach us.

🌍 WHY DO WE TRAVEL THOUSANDS OF KILOMETERS JUST TO GO DIVING?

Plane, train, car, ferry. They took my regulator at security and fiddled with it for ages. My wetsuit takes up half my carry-on luggage. Our gear is in checked luggage, but the fins just won’t fit anywhere. Our fellow passengers give us puzzled looks: “And all this just to swim underwater?”

We don’t swim. We dive.

And we’re ready to travel thousands of kilometers. Not because we’re bored. Not because we can’t sit still. But because somewhere out there, beyond the horizon, it’s not just water waiting for us. A reef we’ve never seen before awaits us. A school of manta rays that will glide overhead, blocking out the sun. A silence in which we’ll hear our true selves.

Divers are people who don’t wait for a miracle to knock on their door. They get up at four in the morning. They drink coffee on an empty pier. They watch the fog rise above the water. And they head out to sea on a dive boat to meet the sunrise underwater.

We’re not running away from reality. We’re returning to ourselves. To a place where there’s nothing superfluous. Just your breath, the depth, and the endless blue all around.

And every time you return to shore, you realize: those 45 minutes were worth it. You worked, saved, waited, and flew for them. You live for them.

So if someone ever asks you, “Why go so far?”—just smile. And say, “There’s depth there. And I’m a diver.”

🌊 THE JOURNEY TO THE DIVE SITE IS ALREADY PART OF THE DIVE

We often think of diving as the moment when you take your first breath underwater. But in reality, it all starts earlier.

Packing your gear. Checking your regulator. The smell of neoprene. The coffee in your thermos that you take with you to the pier. The journey: asphalt, dirt roads, back roads. Or a flight halfway around the world. Or the rocking of the boat as the shore has just disappeared over the horizon.

All of this isn’t just a prelude. It’s already the dive. Because in those moments, you’re already there—in your thoughts, in your anticipation, in your heart.

Divers know: the journey itself is part of the adventure. Chatting with your buddy along the way. The view out the window. The anticipation of finally seeing the water ahead. All of this is yours. All of this is diving.
