World Oceans Day 🌊
A few of our favorite local underwater faces. In Baja California Sur, we are lucky to be on the ocean every day.
But you don’t even need to be near the water to benefit. Here are just a few of the incredible ways our oceans help sustain life on our planet:
💨 Phytoplankton in the ocean produce over 50% of the world’s oxygen.
🌡️ The ocean has absorbed more than 90% of the excess heat from climate change over the past 50 years, acting as the planet’s shock absorber.
🐟 More than 3 billion people rely on seafood as a primary protein source.
🪸 Coral reefs cover less than 1% of the ocean floor but support nearly 25% of all marine life.
It’s no secret that our oceans are in decline globally. With the Super El Niño on the way this year, we should all be a little extra worried.
What are some things you can do to help?
🛍️ Less single-use plastic. Bring your own bottle, bag, cup.
🧴 Skip reef-toxic sunscreens (oxybenzone, octinoxate).
🗳️ Vote. Local and national elections determine marine protected areas, fishing policy, climate funding, etc.
💰 Make a statement with your money. Shop small and local. Buy from brands that avoid excess emissions, plastic, etc.
