Something unusual is happening in the Mexican Caribbean. 🐢🌊

Today, our dive crew found sea turtle eggs underwater in the Palancar area of Cozumel. A few weeks ago, a similar situation was also reported in Mahahual.

Sea turtles normally come ashore to lay their eggs in the sand not underwater. Finding eggs like these on the seafloor raises an important question: why is this happening?

Is it an isolated event, or are we beginning to see a pattern?

These observations deserve attention. Changes in nesting conditions, disturbances, environmental factors, or other causes could potentially be involved, and documenting these events may help researchers better understand what is happening.

🐢 Lunch time in Cozumel! 🌊🐚

We caught this beautiful Loggerhead Sea Turtle enjoying a snail during one of our dives in Cozumel! 🤿

Fun fact: Loggerheads have extremely powerful jaws, specially adapted for crushing hard-shelled prey like snails, conchs, crabs, and other mollusks. 🐚🦀

One of the best parts about diving in Cozumel is never knowing what incredible wildlife encounter is waiting around the next corner. 💙

Descending into one of Cozumel’s most legendary dive sites… Devil’s Throat. 😈🤿

A deep cavern, strong currents, narrow swim-throughs, and an unforgettable exit into the blue at over 40 meters (130 ft). This is not just another reef dive it’s an adventure reserved for experienced divers.

Guided by local Cozumel dive professionals with decades of experience, we explored one of the most challenging and rewarding underwater experiences the island has to offer.

Devil’s Throat is not a dive we offer to first-time guests. In fact, we only take divers there after we have dived with them multiple times and have personally evaluated their skills, buoyancy, air consumption, comfort in strong currents, and overall diving experience.

This is one of the reasons all of our guides are local professionals with decades of experience diving Cozumel’s reefs. Safety always comes first, and not every diver is a suitable candidate for Devil’s Throat.

Great encounter!!
We caught this nurse shark in action!

What you’re seeing is called “rooting” the shark is digging into the seafloor to flush out hidden prey. All that sand pouring out of its gills? That’s the shark using its incredibly powerful suction to vacuum up sand and water, filtering it out while searching for whatever’s buried underneath. 💨

Nurse sharks (Ginglymostoma cirratum) have one of the strongest suction forces of any shark, plus little whisker like barbels near their mouth that help them sniff out prey under the sediment.
What they eat:
🦞 Lobster
🦀 Crab
🐙 Octopus
🐟 Flatfish & small bony fish
🦑 Squid
Even stingrays buried in the sand!
