The 2004 European Championship was the 12th edition of the competition. It took place from 12 June to 4 July 2004.
Hosted by Portugal, it was competed by 16 teams. A total of 31 matches were played and 77 goals scored.
It witnessed a number of upsets, as some of the tournament's favourites like Germany, Spain and Italy were all eliminated at the group stages.
In the quarter-finals, defending champions France were eliminated by Greece, who were playing in the competition for the first time in 24 years.
For the first time in a major European football tournament, the same two teams (Portugal and Greece) featured in the opening match and final match.
Greece had won 2-1 in the group stage and went on to win 2-1 in the final, thanks to a goal by Angelos Charisteas.
Czech Republic's Milan Baroลก finished as the tournament's top scorer with 5 goals.
Greece's Theodoros Zagorakis was named Best Player of the tournament.
