The High Court in Lilongwe ruled that the Chief Secretary cannot redeploy Malawi Police officers, as only the Police Service Commission holds that power.

Justice William Msiska delivered the judgment on an injunction obtained by the officers against their transfers.

Counsel Khumbo Soko stated the government will appeal and sought leave and a stay, but the stay was refused, though the court allowed a written application.

The Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA) has announced significant price reductions for petrol, diesel, and kerosene, effective from 00:00 hours on June 19, 2026, following a review of petroleum prices for the month, according to a statement issued by Board Chairperson Lucas Kondowe.

Petrol prices have dropped by 9.50%, falling from MWK 6,209 per litre to MWK 5,619 per litre. Diesel prices decreased by 5.70%, moving from MWK 6,687 to MWK 6,306 per litre, while kerosene experienced the steepest reduction of 16.43%, declining from MWK 5,709 to MWK 4,771 per litre.

According to MERA's statement, the price cuts were triggered under the Automatic Pricing Mechanism (APM) after Inbound Landed Costs (IBLCs) fell above the ±5% threshold. The Energy Pricing Committee's recommendations were based on June 2026 daily average trading prices, road freight rates, insurance, handling, and in-transit losses.

"By law, all retail operators are required to sell these products at prices not exceeding the approved maximum pump prices," the regulatory body stated.

However, MERA cautioned that ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East continue to pose risks to global petroleum markets, which could impact future supply chain costs and pricing.
