PARADISE… OR NIGHTMARE? 😳🦈
It depends on who you ask.
Walk along the shoreline of tiny Keyodhoo and sooner or later you’ll notice something unusual:
Nurse sharks are everywhere.
Not at one special tourist spot. Not just in one corner of the island. You can see them cruising through the crystal-clear shallows at different places around Keyodhoo — often together with rays and sea turtles.
And then there’s our little harbour…
On some days you can see 30 or 40 nurse sharks in this small area alone. Across the whole island, it sometimes feels like there must be around a hundred.
But why Keyodhoo?
Because this has always been a fishing island. 🎣🇲🇻
Long before guesthouses and tourism created another source of income for local families, fishing was at the heart of life on Keyodhoo.
Fishing boats came home with their catch. Fish were cleaned and processed around the harbour. Generation after generation, nurse sharks learned to live alongside this daily activity.
Today, this unusual relationship between fishermen, sharks and the ocean is simply part of Keyodhoo.
Visitors stop and stare.
For the people who grew up here, seeing nurse sharks cruising past the harbour wall is just another day at home. ❤️
