-----------------------------------------------------

What is Baton Twirling? Baton Twirling is a sport involving the manipulation of a metal rod with the hands and body to a co-coordinated routine, similar to rhythmic gymnastics. The distinguishing fundamental characteristics are:
• Handling of the baton instrument to create visual images, pictures and patterns, executed with dexterity, smoothness, fluidity, and speed, both close in and around the body and by releasing the baton into the air.
• Expression of the body through dance and movement to create a demonstration of strength, flexibility, physical fitness, beauty, aesthetics, and harmony in coordination with the manipulation of the baton.
• The incorporation of gymnastic movements adapted to baton twirling to create additional elements of risk and excitement. The discipline requires the simultaneous blending of these fundamental characteristics all set to music, utilising time and space to display both technical merit and artistic expression in creating a total package for the viewer’s eye. History: Origins
Baton Twirling started in Asia and was introduced in Europe during the 60s.The sport came to North America when Major Millsap’s created Baton Twirling when he established Millsap's College in the United States in Mississippi after the Civil War. Baton Twirling was fully recognised by the United States during the 80s. While many member countries have their own national organisations, the World Baton Twirling Federation governs the sport of Baton Twirling, and conducts Championships held on an annual basis. Baton Twirling started in Mauritius in 1973, when Mrs Ginette Lecordier-Cabon introduced this activity at the Queen Elizabeth College. Majorettes of this institution have participated in World Baton Twirling Championships held in 1990 and 1993, in The Netherlands( Amsterdam) and France( Marseille) respectively. Baton Twirling is an athletic endeavour enhanced through creativity. It is a fun sport that combines the skilful mastery of twirling, tossing and catching batons with body movements incorporating dance and gymnastics. Participants are guaranteed to have a blast while improving hand-eye coordination, musicality and confidence. The Goal of this program is to allow children to participate in a recreational activity that provides them with fun, fitness and baton basics. Each lesson will include: warm up to music, introduction to batons skills and introduction to dance basics. We strongly believe in encouraging students to do their best and work to their full potential. We strive to provide a positive and rewarding learning experience for each and every student.
“Baton Twirling offers many physical and academic benefits to twirling participants. Baton Twirling requires a high level of concentration, focus, and self-discipline. These types of skills can lead to higher levels of academic performance. This sport helps students improve motor planning skills. Baton Twirling emphasises eye-hand coordination, but also develops components of physical fitness such as flexibility and agility. These skills, along with a feeling of personal accomplishment and enhanced self-esteem lead to well-rounded, effective students.” Ms. Terry Stencel, Meadowbrook Elementary - Physical Education, Wisconsin, USA. Pre Competitive Programme
Recreation athletes desiring more of a challenge can choose to learn pre-competitive events designed to introduce the athlete to competition. These individual events include: Basic March, Forward Motion, Pre-Medley, Pre-Solo, Pre-Solo Dance Twirl and Pre Two-Baton. Recreational athletes are also given the opportunity to join a dance twirl team where they learn to work with other athletes and develop team building skills.

Bonjour!
