Dorian Yates: "Gyms now... I don’t think they’re really gyms. They’re not gyms — they’re fitness facilities. I can go into one of these places — we have them in England — where you pay £15–£20 a month, and there’s nothing. They’ve got about 30 treadmills, tons of cardio machines, everything you can imagine, but the people in there don’t even look like they go to the gym.
It’s such a sterile environment. They don’t encourage you. It’s like, ‘Hey, shhh, don’t make noise, don’t sweat on the floor.’ It feels more like a clinic.
A gym should be a place where you can lift, and if you’re lifting weights and pushing yourself, you’re going to scream, you’re going to shout — it’s going to be noisy. That’s the way it is.
People nowadays don’t like hard work. They want the results, but they don’t want to take the journey. And it’s the journey that makes you, not the result."
