FIDE flagship event of the year, the 46th Chess Olympiad scheduled from 15th to 27th September 2026 in Samarkand (Uzbekistan) is drawing closer. Yesterday the MCF has remitted to some of our Olympiad team members in both the Open and Women category, their branded track suit with our national colours and the logo of both the MCF and our sponsor the SWAN group. Stefan Lee Luen Mang, Stephane Lam Kin Cheung, Aamirah Beekhy, Chethanah Andhin, Tehja Andhin and Manusha Aubeeluck were present to collect the track suit that they will proudly wear during this event.
On Day 3 of the Gymkhana Rapid Championship 2026 registration, already 77 slots have been taken and only 13 slots remain before we close registration. This event will be of a very high level as almost all of our Olympiad players have registered as well as other elite players and top Juniors.
Latest Update-The MCF will offer to all participants a complimentary bottle of water and a sandwich at lunch time thanks to our generous Sponsors Gymkhana Club Vacoas and SWAN group.

On the international front the African Zonal 4.4 came to a close in Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) this Sunday 26th July 2026. Our representative in the Women section, WCM Chethanah Andhin, finished 7th out of 14 players on 4 points out of 7 games. She could have improved her score but missed the conversion of 2 winning positions.The Women section was won by WFM Sasha Mongeli (Kenya) who finished on 6 points. In the Open section Top seed IM Milanto Harifidy Ralison (Elo 2325)from Madagascar cruised to the title, finishing unbeaten on 7.5 points.He is the same shy teenager who represented Madagascar at the RIU Zonal in Mauritius in 2016.He confided to Chethanah that the famous RIU Zonal remain to date his best chess tournament experience with its unlimited All Inclusive package to all participants.
There was the election of the African Chess Confederation President today and in a close race the team Next Move led by Kenya Bernard Wanjala defeated the team led by former ACC President Tshepiso Lopang (Botswana) by 25 to 24 votes. Our representative Rama Baloonuck (MCF Assistant Treasurer) had the opportunity to network with our African peers. He met FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich, GM Nigel Short, Benjamin Hoareau and Johanna Rakotonaina respectively President of Seychelles Chess Federation and Madagascar Chess Federation. He also met the new ACC President Bernard Wanjala and his team and conveyed MCF congratulations to them and hope that there will be closer collaboration with the ACC and the MCF on various chess projects in the near future.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT-Due to unavailability of the venue on 9th August 2026 the MCF wishes to inform its members that the GYMKHANA National Rapid Championship 2026 has been rescheduled to the 23rd August 2026 at the Gymkhana club Vacoas.Registration to the tournament will be opened shortly.

The African Zonal 4.4 Individual Chess Championship is underway in Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) and will last till 27th July 2026.
The tournament regroup 14 countries from East Africa, including Mauritius which made the switch from the Southern African Zone.
The arrival of Ethiopian Airlines in Mauritius this month now provides direct link to Ethiopia and Mauritius has sent Chethanah Andhin as representative to this event.
Stephane Lee Luen Mang was registered to play but work commitments led to a last minute cancellation.Rama Baloonuck MCF Assistant - Treasurer was also registered to play in the tournament but sadly he could not make it as his father passed away the day he was scheduled to take the flight to Addis Ababa.
The MCF send it's deepest condolences to Rama Baloonuck and family.
However this Sunday Rama Baloonuck will fly to Ethiopia to represent the MCF at the African Chess Confederation congress where there will be a vote to elect the next ACF President.
The tournament saw the presence of only 7 countries, Ethiopia, Mauritius, Madagascar, Somalia,Kenya, Uganda and Djibouti. Four rounds have been played and WCM Chethanah Andhin is holding well, being on 2 points out of 4 games. This tournament will be a good training for her as she will play Board 1 for the Women Mauritius team at the forthcoming Chess Olympiad in Samarkand (Uzbekistan) on 12-27 September 2026.

This Sunday 19th July 2026, the MCF organized the "Young Stars Rapid Championship" in the splendid setting of the Ocean Villas Hotel, Grand Bay.
A strong contingent of our top Juniors were present and they competed fiercely over the 5 rounds for the crown of Best Junior of the island in Rapid play format. In the end two players, Daven Mootin and Sahil Reetoo, emerged with a perfect score of 5 points out of 5 games but Daven Mootin took the title and tournament victory on tie-break as he beat 3 opponents who finished in the Top 10 against Sahil Reetoo sole victory against an opponent in this category. In third place we see Louis Marie Egot who lost against Sahil Reetoo in the last round and in fourth place we find Jules Benaich. Keyaan Allybokus completed the Top 5 after a late rally. Hrishav Emrit lost a key game against the top seed from France, Jean Bernard who had a 1802 Elo rating. The last round game between Jean Bernard and Daven Mootin was of a high level and the latter reeled out the sharp Yugoslav attack to overpower his opponent Sicilian Dragon variation.Both Daven Mootin and Sahil Reetoo are RCPL students who were in the team that won the Chess Inter-Colleges tournament earlier in the year.
Jules Benaich took the U14 category ahead of the promising Aarav Gungah whereas Jean Bernard won the U12 Boys category ahead of Lucas Lam Hung.
On the Girls side Tehja Andhin took the Under 18 category ahead of Sehaj Kaur Chopra, Khilli Meenowa pipped Junon Benaich in the U14 category and Louve Benaich won the U12 category ahead of Divya Janki, by finishing in a stunning overall 15th place in the General Standing.
Daven Mootin won the Star Prize of the event, a one day stay at the Ocean Villas for 2 persons on full board (Monetary value of Rs 10,000) and Sahil Reetoo won a Lunch voucher for 2 persons at the Beach Kitchen restaurant, offered by Ocean Villas Hotel represented at the Prize Giving by the owners Clifford and Doreen Ng.
All the participants and supporting parents had a very nice Chess Day by the beach.

The Young Stars Rapid Championship 2026 is in full swing at the Ocean Villas Hotel, Grand Bay. 58 Juniors are battling over the 64 squares for the Junior Rapid title in the beautiful setting of Grand Bay, one of our top Northern beach resort.

The registration for the Young Stars Rapid Championship 2026 is closed. 58 of our best Juniors have registered to the tournament which will be held tomorrow 19th July 2026 at the Ocean Villas Hotel, Grand Bay.
Top seed is Thavanesh Baloonuck on 1717 Elo points followed by Louis Marie Egot on 1673 Elo points and Daven Mootin on 1655 Elo points.
There are 16 Fide rated players in the field and other strong Juniors such as Hrishav Emrit, Sahil Reetoo, Ewan Mezir and Vishken Munean cannot be ignored for overall tournament victory.
There will be prizes in U12, U14 and U18 categories for the Winner and Runner Up and in both Boys and Girls section.
First three players of the General Standing will be awarded medals and First four will obtain Special Prizes, with the star prize for the winner of the tournament being a One-Day stay on full board for 2 persons at the Ocean Villas.
All participants will enjoy complimentary snacks and drinks at lunch break thanks to our generous Sponsors, Ocean Villas, Grand Bay Corinthians and SWAN group.
