ASA is proud to be bringing OCEANMAN Malta to Għadira Bay on 3 October 2026, and we are looking for experienced kayakers to help support and guide swimmers during the races.

Kayakers must attend a pre-race briefing shortly before the 9:00 a.m. race start and remain available until approximately 3:30 p.m. The exact reporting time will be communicated beforehand.

Each kayaker will be assigned an area between the race buoys. Their role will be to:

🌊 Monitor their assigned section of the course
🏊 Offer support and direction to swimmers
📣 Communicate any concerns to the head of the kayaking team
🛟 Contribute to the event’s wider water-safety arrangements

Qualified rescue officers will also be stationed at sea with jet skis and rescue boats. Kayakers will support the operation by observing the course, guiding swimmers and maintaining communication with the kayaking team leader. They will not be expected to act as rescue officers.

No formal kayaking certification is required, but participants must have practical kayaking experience, be confident at sea and be comfortable remaining on the water for an extended period.

We are proud to welcome Yasu Hirai to the OCEANMAN Malta start line 🇯🇵🌊

One of Japan’s leading open water swimmers, Yasu has represented his country at the highest level of the sport for more than a decade — including two appearances at the Olympic Games.

At London 2012, Yasu made history by becoming Japan’s first-ever Olympic open water swimmer, competing in the 10km marathon swim and finishing 15th.

Four years later, he returned to the Olympic stage at Rio 2016, where he produced an outstanding performance to finish 8th in the 10km open water event, just 4.8 seconds behind the gold medallist.

His international career also includes:
🥉 2011 Summer Universiade — 10km Bronze Medal
🏊 2014 Pan Pacific Championships — 6th Place
🌍 2015 World Championships — 11th Place
🏅 2016 Rio Olympic Games — 8th Place
🥇 2017 Asian Open Water Swimming Championships — 5km Gold Medal

After retiring from competitive swimming in 2020, Yasu returned to professional competition in 2024, combining his own sporting ambitions with coaching and inspiring the next generation of endurance athletes.

From London to Rio, and now to the Mediterranean waters of Malta, we are honoured to welcome a two-time Olympian to the OCEANMAN Malta starting line this October.

ASA Malta is proud to support with Pembroke Athleta for the final race of the PAAT Open Water Summer Series 2026.

Taking place on 19 September 2026 at Mellieħa, Għadira Bay, this event offers swimmers a fantastic opportunity to swim part of the OCEANMAN Malta race route, fine-tune their race strategy, and gain valuable open water experience ahead of OCEANMAN Malta on 3 October 2026.

Whether you're registered for the 2km or 5km distance, this is the perfect chance to familiarise yourself with the conditions and build confidence before race day.

The Aquatic Sports Association of Malta will be holding a Girls Water Polo Talent Identification programme for young players born between 2009 and 2014.

The sessions will be led by National Coach Aurelien Cousin, assisted by Coach Anthony Farrugia, and will provide an opportunity to identify and further develop promising young talent within Maltese women’s water polo.

The programme is open to players who are currently registered with a club and are not part of a National Team setup 🇲🇹

The first-ever Aquaman VisitMalta open-water swimming event brought together swimmers from 16 countries in Marsalforn Bay, Gozo, on August 29–30, marking the debut of what organizers hope will become a fixture on the international open-water calendar. Staged by Otters ASC, Gozo's longstanding swimming club, in partnership with the Aquatic Sports Association of Malta (ASA Malta), the event offered seven race formats; from a 500 m swim for young and first-time competitors to a demanding 5 km open-sea race, alongside a 1km fin race and a 3x500m team relay, drawing entrants ranging from recreational swimmers to seasoned marathon athletes. Racing took place in the calm, clear waters off Marsalforn's Otters Pitch venue.

A strong network of partners underpinned the event, led by premier sponsors Visit Malta and Grand Hotel, alongside event partners Otters A.S.C. and ASA Malta, and local partners BMIT, MeDirect, Meerendal and Nivea.
