The Netherlands Support Oceania Foundation (NSOF) was brought to life in 2009 as an initiative to build a football development bridge between Oceania and Europe. Many professional Dutch coaches went to train and educate in the South Pacific. Also training camps for national teams took place throughout the years.

One objective still stands: Bringing football talent to Europe for a professional football career. A new goal was set in 2019. The idea: Wouldn’t it be great to deliver the first Solomon Islander to Europe who makes it to a professional football contract? Foundation chairman Paul Driessen arranged a number of trials for the talented Atkin Kaua. He took the challenge, did not make it to a professional contract, but Atkin succeeded in uplifting the European interest for Pacific football talent. Atkin can be seen as a true football missionary. Something to be proud of.

The challenge of Netherlands Oceania Support Foundation and it’s partner organisation (Europe Football Agency) remains the same ever since: The first Solomon Islander to become pro football player in Europe. Unfortunately, the world covid crisis has set the Solomon dream on a hold. Just for now… Meanwhile, our constrained focus shifts to Dutch talents. Our strong belief is that Dutch talent can open doors for Pacific talent… Just with the knowledge that we deliver talent and show decisiveness. Our newest contract candidate is Dutch right winger Sjaak Kuyper. He will go on trial at San Gwann FC in the hunt for a professional football contract… To be continued…

THE TRIAL IS ON - 🇲🇹 ATKIN KAUA ON HIS WAY TO MALTA!

Solomon Islands international Atkin Kaua is currently travelling to Malta. His club, Laugu United, has managed to get his flights funded which also received the devoted support from Solomon Islands Football Federation.

Paul Driessen of the Netherlands Oceania Support Foundation: ‘The fact that Atkin has been invited for trial here in Europe is a great recognition of Solomon football. Whatever the outcome of the trial will be – This at least raises European awareness for Solomon Islands and potential for more future trials.’

Atkin’s program after arrival contains a guided tour through the complex of Tarxien Rainbows FC, a welcome by the board and a fitness test in the evening. One day later (Saturday) Atkin will witness the Tarxien Rainbows FC’s match against Mosta FC which is round 12 in the Maltese Premier League.

If Atkin Kaua survives the trial then he will become the first Solomon Islander in history to secure a contract as professional football player in Europe.

SOLOMON AIRLINES STEPS IN TO SUPPORT SOLOMON FOOTBALL PLAYERS

The challenging fundraising task of Solomon Islands football players Joses Nawo and Atkin Kaua has not been left unseen. Their endeavour grabbed the attention from one of the nation’s biggest companies: Solomon Airlines.
Solomon Airlines sponsors the return flight between Honiara and Brisbane for both Joses Nawo and Atkin Kaua. This decreases the required funds by approximately 5,000 Solomon Dollar for each football player.

The support from Solomon Airlines activated after close consultation with the Netherlands Oceania Support Foundation. ‘We are very happy and honored to receive this warm hearted support. The unique nature and golden chance for this country is something worth wile to support. Solomon Airlines is one of the biggest promotors of it’s country and so are Joses and Atkin in terms of football. They might be gate openers for more Solomon talent to play in Europe. Solomon Airlines latterly brings the Solomon dream to have the first ever professional football player in Europe a step closer’ said Paul Driessen, president of the Netherlands Oceania Support Foundation.

Atkin Kaua and Joses Nawo are currently still ambitious to get the remaining funds to make it to Europe in early January. There is still hope as their inviting club, Tarxien Rainbows FC, showed some goodwill to give a few extra days to get their fundraising done.
