Starlites Naxxar Basketball Club

Starlites Naxxar Basketball Club Starlites Basketball Club is one of the most recently formed clubs in Malta. The founder of the club, Ms.

Starlites Basketball Club is a sports organisation which caters for the sport educational needs of all children, young adolescents and adults by offering age and ability appropriate opportunities for learning. Starlites has developed and grown from a club offering a social purpose to female basketball, to a club which is presently participating in all the categories within the Malta Basketball Ass

ociation. Marie Therese Zammit changed the first official team (Sliema Wives) into a women’s social club. The first junior women’s team originated from the parish priest’s ‘dutrina’ list. The club eventually progressed and developed other sectors. The statute was eventually changed to allow males into the club. The development of the mini basketball and youth sectors were a milestone in the development and growth of Starlites basketball club. This focus on the youth sector commenced in the year 2000 when Ivan Riolo was given the responsibility of developing the mini basketball sector. This sector expanded over the following years, making it one of the largest mini basketball and junior basketball communities on the island. Starlites basketball club is run and managed by a working committee made up from the recently elected President Dr. Ivan Riolo, treasurer and finance controller Mr. Tino Riolo, the secretary, Josephine Sultana and members Mr Stephan Magrin, Mr Godfrey Sultana and Mr Timmy Cutugno. Season 2014/15 saw an important milestone in the development of Starlites BC following the introduction of the men division one team in the National league after winning the division 2 championship in the year 2011/12. This milestone saw the development of Virtus as the men's senior team of the club. This agreement offered our young and promising athletes the target of playing in the top league and compete and train with professional players without creating a substantial financial burden on the club. Through this agreement between Starlites and Virtus, management and running of the full club became more disseminated. This allowed for the division of responsibilities within both entities. Starlites to work in the developing sectors whilst Virtus to work in siding the best possible competitive team in the national league. Starlites basketball is one of the most active local clubs. Participation within local basketball competitions and tournaments is only a part of Starlites yearly agenda. A major objective of our club lies within the social domain. Starlites Basketball aims at providing children of all ages and abilities opportunities for being active. The mini basketball nursery targets development of physical literacy together with sport specific skills which help our participants move up the ladder of success and develop from participants into athletes. The Junior sectors provide opportunities for those wishing to take the game of basketball to a higher level by competing and increasing their training levels moving towards the senior categories which were developed with the purpose of motivating our young athletes to give it their best shot and try to make it at this level. Starlites main aim is of increasing the physical active levels of all our participants and members and instill in them the love of leading a healthy active and social lifestyle. We welcome you to the Starlites Website & encourage you to visit the various sections.

🏀 Learning Beyond the Court

One of the most rewarding aspects of our Erasmus mobility was the opportunity to engage in daily discussions and reflections with coaches from different backgrounds. By observing training sessions, participating in clinics, and exploring coaching frameworks, we gained practical insights that will help us further develop our own coaching practices. These experiences reinforce our commitment to providing the best possible basketball environment for our young players.

Beyond the basketball sessions themselves, the exchange of ideas allowed us to reflect on our own coaching habits and identify areas for growth. Topics such as communication, player-centred coaching, practice design, and the development of independent thinkers were recurring themes throughout the week. The experience demonstrated that while clubs may operate in different countries and contexts, many of the challenges and aspirations of youth coaches are shared.

🇩🇪 Erasmus Coaching Mobility – Münster, Germany

Our six-day coach-shadowing experience at Uni Baskets Münster provided an invaluable opportunity to observe one of Germany’s leading youth basketball programmes. Throughout the week, Starlites coaches attended practices across various age groups, analysed coaching methodologies, and exchanged ideas with experienced basketball professionals. The experience offered fresh perspectives on player development, session planning, and creating positive learning environments for young athletes.

Particularly impressive was the consistency of coaching across all age groups, with a strong emphasis on teaching fundamental skills through decision-making and player responsibility. Observing how coaches balanced technical development with enjoyment and engagement reinforced the importance of creating structured yet motivating learning environments. The visit also highlighted how a clear club philosophy can support long-term athlete development and provide continuity throughout a player's journey.
