How are you finding the costs of flying travelling with all your dive gear? It seems to me that in the last 6 months we’ve seen the increasing cost of flights. (Polski poniżej)
And one way of cutting costs and stress is by travelling light. What I mean by this is being more selective about what we take with us on our diving holiday.
As a dive instructor over many years it has amazed me to see the amount of equipment divers travel with. Which adds to their travel costs and sometimes stress of pulling all that stuff around and checking in etc.
What’s even worse is sometimes the airline looses your bags in transit and you having to deal with them to get your gear delivered days after you’ve arrived at your destination, that is, if they find it of course.
So how can you help yourself to travel lighter? By only selecting essentials, your personal gear, some clothes and nothing else.
For me on a standard 7 day trip it’s my mask, regular, wing/BCD, torch, dive computer/s SMB, reel and GoPro. All this fits into my 30ltr rucksack. A dive suit and fins can be hired at little cost from the local centre you’re diving with.
Then clothing, 2 pairs of trousers/shorts, plus I’ll be wearing 1 on my trip, 5 t-shirts, underwear, all in the same rucksack. I’m going to be wearing a jumper, hoodie and a jacket during my trip so it’s going to be on me not taking up luggage space.
This means I don’t have to queue up to check in. I can check in online, carry on my gear and clothes as cabin luggage in my rucksack and keep it with me. When I land I just grab it from the overhead locker and it’s already with me. I don’t have to wait for luggage.
Let’s face it, if you’re going on a dive trip you’ll spend most of your time diving. So what clothes do you really need? And you can get stuff washed locally if needed.
This strategy by far is the simplest way to cut travel costs and stress because you won’t be dragging around a huge dive bag or worrying if the airline will lose it in transit.
There’s also selection of the right gear, smaller devices are better for dive wings/travel BCDs, touchers, cameras, reels etc. Think less weight and size.
But I must admit it’s taken me years to get to this point because I too traveled with lots of gear. It’s simply a mindset to flip.
Anyway I’ve prepared video showing how I do this. And of course it’s for you to find a way that works for you. First of all it’s changing our mindset that enables us to change what’s possible for us.

Jak oceniacie koszty przelotów z całym sprzętem nurkowym? Wydaje mi się, że w ciągu ostatnich 6 miesięcy obserwujemy rosnące koszty lotów.
A jednym ze sposobów na obniżenie kosztów i stresu jest podróżowanie na lekko. Mam tu na myśli bycie bardziej selektywnym w kwestii tego, co zabieramy ze sobą na nasze wakacje nurkowe.
Jako instruktor nurkowania przez wiele lat, byłem zdumiony widząc ilość sprzętu, z jakim podróżują nurkowie. Co zwiększa ich koszty podróży i czasami stres związany z ciągnięciem tych wszystkich rzeczy, odprawą itp.
Co gorsza, czasami linie lotnicze gubią twoje torby w transporcie, a ty musisz się z nimi użerać, aby otrzymać swój sprzęt kilka dni po przybyciu do miejsca przeznaczenia, to znaczy, jeśli go znajdą.
Jak więc możesz pomóc sobie w lżejszym podróżowaniu? Wybierając tylko to, co niezbędne, twój osobisty sprzęt, kilka ubrań i nic więcej.
Dla mnie na standardowej 7 dniowej wyprawie jest to maska, zwykła, skrzydło/BCD, latarka, komputer nurkowy/ SMB, kołowrotek i GoPro. Wszystko to mieści się w moim 30ltr plecaku. Skafander i płetwy można wypożyczyć za niewielką cenę w lokalnym centrum, z którym się nurkuje.
Następnie odzież, 2 pary spodni/szortów, plus 1 będę nosił na wyprawie, 5 koszulek, bielizna, wszystko w jednym plecaku. Podczas wyjazdu będę miał na sobie sweter, bluzę z kapturem i kurtkę, więc to będzie na mnie, żeby nie zajmować miejsca w bagażu.
Oznacza to, że nie muszę stać w kolejce do odprawy. Mogę odprawić się online, przewieźć mój sprzęt i ubrania jako bagaż podręczny w plecaku i mieć go przy sobie. Po wylądowaniu po prostu wyjmuję go ze schowka nad głową i już jest ze mną. Nie muszę czekać na bagaż.
Spójrzmy prawdzie w oczy, jeśli wybierasz się na wyprawę nurkową, większość czasu spędzisz nurkując. Więc jakie ubrania są naprawdę potrzebne? A w razie potrzeby możesz dostać rzeczy wyprane na miejscu.
Ta strategia jest najprostszym sposobem na obniżenie kosztów podróży i stresu, ponieważ nie będziesz ciągnąć za sobą ogromnej torby do nurkowania lub martwić się, czy linia lotnicza zgubi ją w tranzycie.
Jest też wybór odpowiedniego sprzętu, mniejsze urządzenia są lepsze dla skrzydeł nurkowych/podróżnych BCD, toucherów, aparatów, kołowrotków itp. Pomyśl o mniejszej wadze i rozmiarze.
Muszę jednak przyznać, że dojście do tego punktu zajęło mi lata, ponieważ ja również podróżowałem z dużą ilością sprzętu. To jest po prostu sposób myślenia, który trzeba zmienić.
Zresztą przygotowałem filmik pokazujący jak ja to robię. I oczywiście to Ty musisz znaleźć sposób, który działa dla Ciebie. Przede wszystkim to zmiana sposobu myślenia pozwala nam zmienić to, co jest dla nas możliwe.
