𝙃𝙄𝙎𝙏𝙊𝙍𝙔 𝙁𝙊𝙍 𝙈𝘼𝙇𝙏𝙀𝙎𝙀 𝘽𝘼𝘿𝙈𝙄𝙉𝙏𝙊𝙉 🇲🇹🏸

Matthew Abela has returned to Malta with an incredible four medals — two gold and two bronze — after competing across four countries over the past month: Jamaica, Bolivia 🇧🇴 in South Anerica 🇺🇸, Dominican Republic 🇩🇴 and Mexico 🇲🇽

Matthew won the Men’s Singles title and the Mixed Doubles title in Bolivia, South America, securing two gold medals. He also won a bronze medal in Mixed Doubles in Jamaica and another bronze medal in Mexico.

But the success did not stop there 😲

Matthew also reached two semi-finals, earning bronze medals in both. In addition, he reached three quarter-finals — two in Men’s Singles, in Jamaica and the Dominican Republic and one in Mixed Doubles in the Dominican Republic.

These incredible results mark a historic achievement for Maltese badminton. Matthew has become the first Maltese badminton athlete to win medals in three different categories at international tournaments, making this a remarkable milestone in the history of Maltese badminton 🇲🇹💪

𝗔 𝗛𝗨𝗚𝗘 𝗝𝗨𝗠𝗣 𝗜𝗡 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗪𝗢𝗥𝗟𝗗 𝗥𝗔𝗡𝗞𝗜𝗡𝗚𝗦

These outstanding results have also helped Matthew make a significant jump in the BWF world rankings.

Matthew is now ranked World No. 173 in Men’s Singles and World No. 131 in Mixed Doubles.

After an intense month of competition across four countries, four medals, multiple semi-final and quarter-final appearances, and historic achievements, Matthew returns to Malta having made his mark on the international badminton scene.

𝗖𝗟𝗔𝗜𝗠 𝗔𝗡𝗢𝗧𝗛𝗘𝗥 𝗕𝗥𝗢𝗡𝗭𝗘 𝗜𝗡 𝗠𝗘𝗫𝗜𝗖𝗢 🇲🇽🥉

Following a hugely successful campaign in Bolivia, where Matthew claimed double gold and made history as the first Maltese athlete to win an international singles tournament, while also becoming the first Maltese athlete to claim all three titles at an international tournament, Matthew has added another medal to his collection - this time a bronze in Mexico!

After Bolivia, Matthew and Gabriela travelled to Santo Domingo to compete at the Dominican International 2026. In the men’s singles, Matthew reached the quarter-finals, where he narrowly fell to USA’s Jacob Zhang. Gabriela also put in a strong performance, reaching the Round of 16 in the women’s singles. The pair also teamed up in the mixed doubles, progressing to the quarter-finals before their run came to an end with a 16–21, 15–21 defeat.

With little time to rest, Matthew and Gabriela headed straight to Mexico to compete in the VI Mexico Future Series 2026. In the men’s singles, Matthew reached the Round of 32, while Gabriela enjoyed an impressive run in the women’s singles, making it all the way to the quarter-finals. The biggest success, however, came in the mixed doubles. Matthew and Gabriela battled their way through to the semi-finals, securing a well-deserved bronze medal! 🥉

Both Matthew Abela and Gabriela Skorkowska reached the finals in two categories at the II Internacional Badminton Sucre Capital de Bolivia 2026, finishing with two gold medals and one silver! 🤩

🏆🥈𝗚𝗮𝗯𝗶: 𝗚𝗼𝗹𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗠𝗶𝘅𝗲𝗱 𝗗𝗼𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗲𝘀 & 𝗦𝗶𝗹𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝗻 𝗪𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻’𝘀 𝗦𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗹𝗲𝘀

Matthew started with a straight-set win over Leonardo David Colque Solis from Bolivia, 21–6, 21–4. He followed with another win over Jose Mamani Sucari from Peru, 21–7, 21–10, before defeating Rivano Bisphan from Suriname in the semifinals, 21–10, 21–9. In the final, Matthew faced Leo Lee from Paraguay and won a thrilling three-set match, 21–9, 15–21, 21–16, becoming the Men’s Singles champion! 🏆

Gabi received a walkover in the opening round and advanced to the semifinals, where she defeated Melanie Adriana Salvatierra Condori from Bolivia, 21–9, 21–9. In the final, Gabi faced the first-seeded Juliana Giraldo from Colombia. After two closely contested sets, she lost 21–18, 21–17, earning a silver medal in Women’s Singles. 🥈

In the mixed doubles, Matthew and Gabi advanced to the semifinals, defeating Jeremy Mendoza Mamani and Melanie Adriana Salvatierra Condori from Bolivia, 21–10, 21–10. In the final, they faced Gabriel Danilo Rosales Medina and Juanita Siviora, both from Bolivia. Matthew and Gabi won 21–16, 21–18 to become Mixed Doubles champions! 🏆🏆

Wow, what an achievement! Well done to both Matthew and Gabi who made us incredibly proud 💪🇲🇹
