10m ISSF Air-Rifle & Air-Pistol Shooting
Air-Rifle and Air-Pistol shooting is quite a popular sport the world over and is practiced in indoor ranges at a distance of 10m. The popularity is due to being relatively cheap, can be practiced by people of all ages, s*x and disability and can also take place all the year round. This is also an Olympic sport and the first airgun competition in these game
s was held at the Los Angeles Olympic Games in 1984. It is also the only type of airgun shooting that is organized in the Commonwealth Games, Mediterranean Games, Games of the Small States of Europe and in other numerous types of Championships, World Cups and regional competitions. Since that time the springer airguns used have become quite sophisticated and nowadays one can find various makes and models mostly based on low power of 7.5 Joules and with compressed air as the propellant to fire the small lead pellets at fixed paper targets at a distance of 10 meters from the standing shooter. It is also a very safe sport and it is claimed that it is even safer than golf! How to Start
Starting this very passionate sport is quite easy. The best way is to contact our club via an email or give a visit to our range in Bidnija on either a Wednesday after 5.30pm or Saturdays after 3.30pm where you can meet club officials who will be most pleased to give you all the information that you need. Moreover you can see for yourself our shooters during their training and can even talk to them about their favourite sport. At first you don’t need to buy any equipment or even have an airgun as these can be hired from the club at a nominal fee. If then you wish to take up the sport seriously, you will be guided on the different types of equipment and from where to buy at the best prices. Also second-hand equipment may also be available from the shooters themselves most of the time at bargain prices. Licences
Unfortunately in this country, match low power airguns are still classified as fi****ms unlike anywhere else in the world. So, for this reason any person using airguns has to apply for a police licence according to the Arms Regulations 2006. This is a very simple procedure and one can take a short course on the law requirements for airguns and on gun safety and practice at the club. Becoming a full member of the club is one of the requirements of the law and after successfully completing the course, one has to apply for a licence at the local police station. Once the licence is approved by the police, you can buy, carry and use your airgun according to the regulations. Shooting Club Activities
The best thing about this sport is that you can go as deep as you wish. You can also practice with dry-fire at home and come occasionally to the club whenever time permits. At the club we offer seminars, lectures and training sessions for both beginners and advanced shooters as well as organize competitions every fortnight in the various shooting disciplines. Some of these competitions will be selection competitions as advised by the Maltese Olympic Committee through our Malta Shooting Sport Federation. Normally the first placed two shooters in each discipline and provided that they have attained the required MQS (minimum qualifying scores), will be chosen to represent our country in the various international games. For the advanced shooters, various MOC schemes like scholarships, training camps and financial assistance exist to help them improve their chances of winning medals in foreign competitions. Other club activities include regular participation with our counterpart shooting club -TSN Catania in Sicily, having lectures in Sport Shooting Psychology, attending lectures on coaching and functions at the Maltese Olympic Committee and having the occasional club dinners for our members. You are just an email away from discovering a great new sport which we are sure that you will thoroughly enjoy and in which you will surely do well
