Responsibilities of being a Basketball Coach -

A basketball coach has a myriad of responsibilities that include the importance of being a moral, upstanding role model for the players on his team. As NBA great Dave Debusschere said, »The best teams have chemistry. They communicate with each other and they sacrifice personal glory for the common goal.« A coach is not only a role model but also a mentor and teacher.

A basketball coach will mold and develop his team as people as well as athletes. He is responsible for his players the same way a school teacher or parent is responsible. The coach is responsible for his players well being and safety while the players are in the coach’s care. Every country and state has specific laws which govern coaches of athletes, whether you are coaching children, adults, amateurs, college level, or professionals. He has a duty to the team and staff to assist them with their physical and mental health. They have moral and legal obligations to their team.

Find the list of some of the responsibilities of a coach below but realize that there are more:

•A coach must develop a coaching philosophy.
•A coach must develop appropriate curriculum to teach the sport.
•A coach must make age appropriate decisions and plans for his team.
•A coach must be responsible for the environment where the team plays.
•A coach must inspire his team and motivate them when needed.
•A coach must make sure all legal, moral, ethical standards are in place.
•A coach must be a communicator who is clear and well spoken.
•A coach must be reliable, responsible, and compassionate.
•A coach must know the rules and follow them for the game of basketball.
•A coach must be adaptable and flexible.
•A coach must include all people and needs to be tolerant of social differences.
•A coach must not discriminate, be racist, bigoted, nor allow such behaviors on court.
•A coach must be trustworthy and honest with his players.
•A coach must respect himself, his players, his staff, and the community.
•A coach must know the laws that govern employees and comply.
•A coach must know about first aid, health laws, and maintain safe equipment.
•A coach must acknowledge injury or a player and follow procedures for the players care.
•A coach must know how to provide effective constructive criticisms to his players even during times of stress like during games.

HEY to Wheelchair Basketball Players !

I heard someone saying that: Enable the Disabled. Translate Disability into Ability, Capability, a winning Opportunity - indeed a reality....Courage and strength is not a absence of fear- it's refusing to assume the role of a victim. As far as I am concerned, disability means possibility ....

BASKETBALL SPECTATORS’ CODE OF CONDUCT-

Basketball is intended to be a recreational activity for enjoyment and health. This code of conduct has been developed by Basketball Victoria to give participants some guide to the expectations it has on those participants. It is intended to assist everyone to obtain the maximum benefit and enjoyment from their involvement in basketball. As a result, the quality of participation will be improved so people are more likely to start and continue their involvement in basketball.

1. Remember that most people play sport for enjoyment.
People are not playing basketball for the entertainment of spectators nor are many of them professionals. You should be watching basketball for your own enjoyment and to show support for those playing. Help the players to enjoy their game. Applaud good performances from each team. Congratulate all players regardless of the outcome.

2. Accept decisions of all referees as being fair and called to the best of their ability.
Referees and officials have a difficult task to perform. You would not have a game to enjoy without them. They are there to enforce the rules of play but they cannot always be right. Accept bad calls graciously. Abuse of referees is unacceptable behaviour. Spectators who consistently dispute decisions or do not accept bad decisions are bad sports. If you disagree with a decision, accept it graciously – you cannot change it.

3. Always be positive in your support for players.
Never ridicule or shout at a player, particularly a young player for making a mistake during competition. Positive support for players will offer encouragement to them and most likely spur them to better things on the court.

4. Condemn the use of violence in any form.
Never encourage players to engage in violence or engage in it yourself. Violence has no place in basketball and strong action should be taken to discourage it.

5. Respect your team’s opponents, officials and spectators.
Without your team’s opponents, there would be no game. Their supporters are there to enjoy the game as much as you are. Light-hearted banter with an opposing spectator can add a further element of fun to a game. Conversely, nasty or inappropriate behaviour or remarks will seriously detract from it.

6. Encourage players to obey the rules and to accept decisions of officials.
Often players can get carried away when spectators become enthusiastic or heated over an issue. This can be a positive but it can also be negative when it involves such behaviour as disputing decisions. Always encourage players to obey the rules and do not dispute referees’ decisions.

7. Demonstrate appropriate social behaviour by not using foul language or harassing players, coaches or officials.
Anti social behaviour such as foul or abusive language has no place in basketball. If others engage in it, just ignore them – they will soon tire of it if they get no reaction. Alternatively, ask them politely to desist. If it continues and it is serious, bring it to the attention of an official.

8. Respect the rights, dignity and worth of every person.
Regardless of their gender, ability, cultural background, religion or other factor irrelevant to the game, all persons connected with basketball are entitled to equal treatment and respect. Avoid any remarks that could be construed as offensive or discriminatory. Sometimes even a joke may give offence. Even if a person refers to themselves with a particular label, it should not be taken as an invitation for you to do so. Using discretion is imperative and it is better to err on the side of caution.

9. Keep children in your care under control.
Basketball encourages you to bring your children to games. However, there can be dangers to them in a basketball stadium. They can also constitute a danger to players. You should ensure that children with you at a basketball game are well behaved and do not wander onto or too near to courts. They can easily be knocked down by a player or a player can trip over a child when concentrating on the play and not expecting a small child to be in the way.

10. Always respect the use of facilities and equipment provided.
Facilities and equipment cost money and will only function properly if kept in good order. Ensure that you do not abuse anything provided for use. Do not encourage players to engage in dangerous practices such as hanging off hoops or “slam dunking”. Quite properly, these practices are banned in most venues. Not only can equipment be damaged but also serious injury can occur. Enjoy !!

HOW IT BEGUN -

Basketball is a relatively new sport, invented in 1891. It has now grown into one of the most popular sports in the world.

Keeping students fit-

Basketball was invented in December 1891 by Canadian James W. Naismith. An instructor at the YMCA Training School in Massachusetts, he sought a suitable indoor game to keep his students fit and warm during the cold New England winters. He formulated 13 rules, most of which still apply today. In 1893, the first women’s game was played at the Smith College, in Northampton, Massachusetts, USA.

Peach baskets-

Originally, basketball was played with peach baskets and balls had to be retrieved manually after each score. Subsequently, a hole was drilled into the bottom of the basket allowing the balls to be poked out with a long rod. In 1906, the peach baskets were finally replaced by metal hoops with backboards.

Orange ball-

Basketball was originally played with a soccer ball. The first balls made specifically for basketball were brown, and it was only in the late 1950s that Tony Hinkle, searching for a ball that would be more visible to players and spectators alike, introduced the orange ball that is now in common use.

Global popularity increases-

In the early 1900s, students from abroad who had studied in Springfield, started to spread the game. In the 1920s, the first international games were played and by 1950 the first World Championship for Men was held in Argentina. Three years later, in 1953, the first World Championship for Women took place in Chile.

Olympic history-

Basketball made its appearance at the Olympic Games in 1904 in St Louis as a demonstration sport, as the competition was held between only American teams and counted as an event of the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU of the USA) Championships.
At the Games in 1936 in Berlin, basketball joined the Olympic programme, where it has remained to this day. Women’s basketball debuted at the 1976 Games in Montreal.
The USA dominates international basketball and won all the titles up to 1972, the year it was defeated by the Soviet Union at the Munich Games. In the women’s event, the Soviets took gold in 1976, 1980 and 1992, and were later dominated by the Americans between 1984 and 2008, except in 1992.
In 1992 at the Barcelona Games, famous players from the National Basketball Association (NBA) were allowed for the first time to represent the USA. This team, known as the “Dream Team” in the international media, was undoubtedly the best basketball team ever formed. It delighted the public and widely dominated the Olympic tournament in 1992.

History of Basketball-
Dr. James Naismith (or) Inventor of Basketball-

Dr. James Naismith is known world-wide as the inventor of basketball. He was born in 1861 in Ramsay township, near Almonte, Ontario, Canada. The concept of basketball was born from Naismith's school days in the area where he played a simple child's game known as duck-on-a-rock outside his one-room schoolhouse. The game involved attempting to knock a "duck" off the top of a large rock by tossing another rock at it. Naismith went on to attend McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.
In addition to the creation of the basketball, James Naismith graduated as a medical doctor, primarily interested in sports physiology and what we would today call sports science and as Presbyterian minister, with a keen interest in philosophy and clean living. Naismith watched his sport, basketball, introduced in many nations by the YMCA movement as early as 1893. Basketball was introduced at the Berlin Olympics in 1936. Today basketball has grown to become one of the world's most popular sports.

James Naismith devised a set of thirteen rules of basketball:

1. The ball may be thrown in any direction with one or both hands.
2. The ball may be batted in any direction with one or both hands, but never with the fist.
3. A player cannot run with the ball. The player must throw it from the spot on which he catches it, allowance to be made for a man running at good speed.
4. The ball must be held in or between the hands. The arms or body must not be used for holding it.
5. No shouldering, holding, pushing, striking or tripping in any way of an opponent. The first infringement of this rule by any person shall count as a foul; the second shall disqualify him until the next goal is made or, if there was evident intent to injure the person, for the whole of the game. No substitution shall be allowed.
6. A foul is striking at the ball with the fist, violations of Rules 3 and 4 and such as described in Rule 5.
7. If either side make three consecutive fouls it shall count as a goal for the opponents (consecutive means without the opponents in the meantime making a foul).
8. Goal shall be made when the ball is thrown or batted from the ground into the basket and stays there, providing those defending the goal do not touch or disturb the goal. If the ball rests on the edge and the opponents move the basket, it shall count as a goal.
9. When the ball goes out of bounds, it shall be thrown into the field and played by the first person touching it. In case of dispute the umpire shall throw it straight into the field. The thrower-in is allowed five seconds. If he holds it longer, it shall go to the opponent. If any side persists in delaying the game, the umpire shall call a foul on them.
10. The umpire shall be judge of the men and shall note the fouls and notify the referee when three consecutive fouls have been made. He shall have the power to disqualify men according to Rule 5.
11. The referee shall be the judge of the ball and decide when it is in play in bounds, to which side it belongs, and shall keep the time. He shall decide when a goal has been made and keep account of the goals with any other duties that are usually performed by a referee.
12. The time shall be two 15-minute halves with five minutes' rest between.
13. The side making the most goals in that time shall be declared the winners.

Wheelchair Basketball
Wheelchair basketball was originally developed by World War II veterans as part of rehabilitation in the USA in 1945. Since then, the sport has grown worldwide and was introduced at the Rome 1960 Paralympic Games. Today, it is practiced in nearly 100 countries. Wheelchair basketball is basically a game of basketball while riding a wheelchair and it is played between two teams with five players each who cannot use their lower body. It is designed for athletes who have a physical impairment that prevents running, jumping and pivoting.

All athletes have an impairment affecting their legs or feet that would prohibit them to compete equally in able-bodied basketball. Even though all athletes compete in a wheelchair, not all of the players are wheelchair users in daily life and most of them can function using their arms well.

Similar to the travelling violation where an athlete takes three or more steps without dribbling, it is also a violation to touch the wheels more than three times while holding the ball on the player’s lap when playing wheelchair basketball. Unlike in regular basketball, double dribble is not considered a violation. It is allowed to dribble again after picking up one’s dribble.
