What Parents Should Know Before Enrolling Their Child in Dance
Before enrolling your child in dance, I think there is one important question parents should ask:
“What do I want my child to gain from dance?”
Is it confidence?
Fitness and healthy movement?
Discipline?
Creativity?
Social skills?
Or perhaps, eventually, professional training?
Knowing your goal helps you choose the right class and environment for your child.
But there are a few things I want every parent to understand.
1. Progress takes time.
Your child may not become confident or technically strong after a few classes. Dance is a process.
2. Don’t compare your child with other students.
Every dancer develops differently. Encourage progress rather than comparison.
3. Attendance matters.
Consistent training helps children build skills, confidence, and responsibility.
4. Let them enjoy dancing.
Not every child needs to become a professional dancer. Sometimes the greatest benefit is simply discovering something they love.
5. Look beyond the choreography.
A good dance education should develop more than steps. It should help children understand movement, music, discipline, creativity, teamwork, and self-expression.
6. Choose the teacher and environment carefully.
Children learn not only from what a teacher teaches, but also from how they are treated.
And finally, listen to your child.
If they are struggling, talk to them. If they are excited, encourage them. If they want to explore something different, give them space to discover it.
As a parent, you don’t have to become their dance teacher.
You can simply be the person who supports their journey.
