We did two more hikes on Saturday - one to and around Black Lake, and one to Lake Zminje. Both beautiful with blue/green clear water. Both pretty easy (although I wasn’t a fan of jumping on rocks to get over the little water fall areas but I managed).

We headed to Tara Bridge too but it is under construction so I imagine it I’d beautiful otherwise! The views weee nice…

Dinner was at a local place that was very cute. We dined on a delicious tomato salad, trout and Hungarian stew (finally found one I liked!)

Highly recommend Durmitor National Park if you ever visit Montenegro!

When we hiked up to the fort above Kotor, we met a couple from New Zealand that told us we had to do sone hiking up in the Durmitor National Park.

So we rented a car, booked 2 nights in an A frame measure house and headed 3 hours north.

On the way, we stopped at the cute town of Perast and ended up having breakfast at one of the waterfront restaurants bcs it was just so beautiful.

We continued winding our way into the mountains, stopping often to take in the view.

Our place was located just out of the town of Zabljak. We decided to head down towards Tara River Canyon, but got a bit lost so ended up pulling over at a small restaurant. Next to the parking lot was a path that we decided to head up.

We ended up hiking to Čurevac viewpoint. 360degree stunning view of mountains, canyon, clouds. The photos and videos can not do it justice.

We stayed up at the viewpoint for a while chatting with other travelers. One of the best part of traveling is who you meet and for a few minutes your path crosses with people from around the world!

We headed back, had a “meat platter” at a restaurant in Zabljak then headed back to our little a cabin and enjoyed the evening. The stars were out, but it was a little chilly, so we didn’t stay out too long.

Another beautiful day!

On the Friday, we decided to do the boat tour that is popular to do when you in Kotor. It headed to “Lady of our rocks” islet, and the blue cave, as well as some submarine tunnels.

It was fun to be on the water and the whole area is stunning. The blue cave was only meh compared to the one in Croatia, but still pretty.

That evening we decided to take the shuttle out to the cable car.

When we started up in the cable car, it seemed a bit underwhelming, but then we went over a peak which I thought was the end and it kept going… and WOW!!

It was absolutely stunning and the pictures can’t do it justice. There was a restaurant/bar up there but we were disappointed it was closed for a private event:( It would have been great to have drinks there!

We walked around up top taking in the stunning views and the returned to old town. We are really happy with our little Airbnb in the heart of everything!

We found a cute Airbnb in old town Kotor. Very touristy with all the cruises that come through, but we like staying where we have very easy access to restaurants, grocery stores, and things to do, and old town had some cute Airbnb’s.

We wandered and explored the first day, and decided to start with hiking to the fortress overlooking kotor (about 1400 steps).

Our Airbnb is literally at the start of the stairs up, so we rolled out of bed and headed up :)

Along the way, we met a lovely couple from New Zealand who shared with us the incredible time they had had further north (3 hour drive) in Durmitor National Park. It planted the seed….

We finished the hike, enjoyed the incredible view, and then headed back down.

Pizza is a big thing here too, so we grabbed a slice to share and walked around town.

The afternoon was dedicated to some naps and work and we researched our plans for the weekend…

What are you saving for?

Money is easy to measure.

Time isn’t.

Neither is health.

As we’ve been traveling these past few months, I’ve been thinking a lot about the small window in life where time, health, and resources can overlap.

And how often our nervous systems convince us to wait just a little longer before we fully live.

I say down to reflect on this season in my life: midlife, uncertainty, travel, nervous systems, and the question I’ve been asking myself over and over lately, including:

What exactly are we waiting for?

We were sad to leave Croatia, but had to get out of the Schengen region ( bcs we want to save 2 weeks of our 90 days allowed to finish off our travels in Sicily.)

Even though they are so close, travel to Montenegro from Croatia was a bit of a pain. Can’t rent a car to cross border, flights were long, even ferry required a bit of back and forth especially with our luggage 😬😬 ( I definitely would have changed my packing strategy had I known we would do more than a month or so in Portugal! )

We ended up hiring a driver to take us there as it was the best value… and it ended up being pretty cool bcs our driver loved to take us on small detours to see stuff.

The best detour he took us on was to the lookout point where the cable car goes from old town Dubrovnik. We decided to skip Dubrovnik all together this trip bcs we are stopping there on our cruise this September after my retreat (and people said all you need is a day). It looks like a great city to check out so I’m looking forward to it.

The border crossing was pretty easy - had to get out on the Croatian side and on Montenegro side too. But I think we are set with our allowable days 🤞🏻

The drive to Montenegro was along the water and was stunning!

We arrived mid afternoon in Kotor (home for 3 weeks… we have a few day trips: weekend trips we may do) but we found a super cute air bnb right in the heart of old town.

We had a great fish platter for a very late lunch, did some groceries, wandered around a bit and unpacked.

It’s amazing how new everything feels-getting lost in the maze of pathways- only to know in short period of time it will all be familiar.

Looking forward to our time here!

On Monday we got up early to walk along the other side of the waterfront that we hadn’t seen yet… also stunning! I wish we had more time!

We boarded a ferry and within an hour were back “home” where we did some laundry and work.

Later that afternoon we headed into old town, picked up some pasta to go and enjoyed it by the water.

On Tuesday, we went to one of Split’s most beautiful beaches (hard act to follow after Hvar!).

It was ok. We are getting spoiled!

We went to a late lunch after the beach, but the restaurant was still only serving brunch.

We ordered their breakfast charcuterie and it was very good!

The late afternoon brought a quick nap, some work, some packing up, and one last walk and gelato by the waterfront.

Split had been more than we anticipated. I’m so glad we got a chance to visit it. It was originally on the cruise that we’re taking post my Italy retreat, but they had to change it for another location in Greece… so I’m glad we got to experience it!

(We even saw the cruise ship we’ll be on in the port!) Sent a photo to my cruise Bellas for a little hype!

On Sunday, we headed the Paklani islands by water taxi.

There are so many to choose from, but we decided to visit Mlini beach.

It was a super chill day on the beach. The water is still very cool, but clear and stunning!

In the evening we had a fabulous dinner at Mediterraneo and then decided we’d climb up to the fortress for sunset.

The views were beautiful, well worth the climb up!

Hvar is a must when you are in Croatia!!

It was a pretty magical place for us. Definitely d highlight of our trip (and so glad we extended to 3 nights - but we could have done more!)

We decided to rent a VW bug for the day (popular thing to do here) and explore the island of Hvar.

There were so many picturesque places to stop we had to force ourselves to keep driving…

We visited Stari Grad (where we found the cutest bench by the water for some Niksen time), Vrboska, Jelsa, a remote beach (we had the beach all to ourselves!) and then Dubovica beach.

The beaches were a bit of a chore to get to, but well worth it!!

We grabbed a bite at the cutest family restaurant (literally their home) on Dubovica beach where we had some fresh fish just caught!

The island of Hvar is absolutely stunning!

That night we had the best sunset sky, and down by the water in the port was a small choir singing in a boat! It felt ridiculously beautiful 💕💕

We were so glad we extended our time on Hvar!
