"There is nothing outside of yourself that can ever enable you to get better, stronger, richer, quicker, or smarter. Everything is within. Everything exists. Seek nothing outside of yourself". - Miyamoto Musashi (The Book of Five Rings)

We all need an aiming point to organize our action and behavior around. Diffuse action is almost always ineffective action. Give someone a target and they’ll soon be hitting it - without a target we just fire away meaninglessly. When you’re grappling you need goals and target as you do everything else in your life. The two best are the mounted position and the rear mount (back) position. When you make these a point of focus you’ll be amazed how your mind and body organize around them to navigate ways to the target in the chaos of sparring. Yes, you’ll need specific techniques and tactics to that make getting there easier and more efficient. Yes you’ll need techniques to keep you there once you’ve attained it - but just having the background goal of the back and mount at all times will give your body and mind a sense of direction that will have a marked effect on your game in minimum time.

GOJU-RYU: THE JOURNEY FROM OKINAWA TO JAPAN 🇯🇵🥋

Goju-Ryu is one of the most respected traditional karate styles in the world. Its name represents the central philosophy of the art: Go, meaning hard, and Ju, meaning soft. Together, these two principles create a martial art that combines power with flexibility, strength with control, and physical technique with disciplined breathing.

The founder of Goju-Ryu was Chōjun Miyagi, an Okinawan martial artist who dedicated his life to preserving and developing the fighting traditions of Okinawa. His training was strongly connected to Naha-te, a system of Okinawan martial arts influenced by Chinese fighting methods. Through years of intense practice and study, Miyagi developed a system that balanced powerful striking techniques with circular movements, close-range combat, breathing control, and body conditioning.

The journey of Goju-Ryu toward mainland Japan became an important chapter in its history. During the early twentieth century, karate was gradually becoming known outside Okinawa. Chōjun Miyagi demonstrated his art and helped introduce the unique principles of Okinawan karate to a wider Japanese audience.

One of the most important elements of Goju-Ryu is the practice of Sanchin. This kata emphasizes breathing, posture, concentration, muscular control, and mental discipline. Another important kata, Tensho, represents the softer and more flowing side of the system. Together, these practices demonstrate the meaning of Go and Ju: hardness and softness working together as one.

Goju-Ryu continued to grow through the dedication of Miyagi's students and later generations of instructors. Important figures helped spread the style throughout Japan and eventually across the world. Different organizations and branches developed, but the essential foundation remained connected to the teachings of Chōjun Miyagi.

Today, Goju-Ryu is practiced in dojo throughout Japan and on every continent. Students train not only to develop effective martial arts techniques but also to build discipline, confidence, respect, physical strength, and mental focus.

The legacy of Goju-Ryu reminds us that true martial arts are more than fighting. Hard techniques require control. Soft techniques require strength. Power must be guided by wisdom, and skill must be supported by respect.

From the traditional training halls of Okinawa to the martial arts communities of Japan and the wider world, Goju-Ryu continues to preserve an important legacy.

GOJU-RYU — HARD AND SOFT, UNITED AS ONE.

'I'm by nature restless and I always want to be going somewhere. People tell me that my success in the ring has been due to my restless energy. I suspect they're right.'
