Concerns Regarding Media Engagement at the Ministry of Youth and Sports
The role of a Public Affairs Director is to foster positive relations with the media and ensure that all journalists are treated with professionalism, fairness, and respect. During the Ministry of Youth and Sports’ recent media engagement on the Minister’s 100-Day Performance Report, concerns were raised regarding the handling of media personnel covering the event.
Several sports journalists who attended the program were reportedly denied the opportunity to cover the event after being informed that only journalists on an official list approved by the Minister would be permitted to do so. This decision left many media practitioners disappointed, particularly those who had traveled to the Ministry with the intention of providing coverage for their respective institutions.
Additionally, concerns were expressed about the manner in which some journalists were addressed following the presentation. Media practitioners expect professional engagement and mutual respect, regardless of their specific media affiliation or area of reporting. Public officials, especially those serving in public relations and communications roles, are expected to maintain cordial relationships with all members of the press.
The Ministry of Youth and Sports serves the interests of all Liberians, including journalists from various media institutions. Therefore, equal respect, transparency, and professionalism should be extended to all media representatives seeking to cover activities of the Ministry.
A strong and respectful relationship between the Ministry and the media is essential for promoting accountability, public awareness, and effective communication. Moving forward, it is hoped that all journalists, including sports reporters, will be given fair opportunities to perform their duties and contribute to informing the public about activities at the Ministry.
As a young Minister we ask to work accordingly and no interference should be between us please let the public affairs director stop this doing at the ministry.
We will remain honest and serve accordingly but please respect all our reporters who strive to cover every media engagement.
