Far from football.
Many people are talking about the recent tension between Liberia 🇱🇷 and Guinea 🇬🇳, but it is important to understand both the current situation and the history behind it.
Recently, there have been reports of a border dispute in the area around Lofa County near the Makona River, where Guinean soldiers were accused of crossing into Liberian territory and raising their flag. This situation caused concern among local communities and the Liberian government, as it touches on national sovereignty and territorial boundaries.
However, this kind of issue is not entirely new. The border between Liberia and Guinea was partly established during the colonial period when France controlled Guinea. Some sections of the border were never clearly marked on the ground, especially in remote forest areas. Because of this, disagreements about the exact boundary have happened before.
During Liberia’s civil war years, the border region also experienced instability, with armed groups and fighters moving between Liberia, Guinea, and Sierra Leone. That history has made the border area sensitive even today.
In addition to the current land dispute, another recent issue that caught attention internationally was the report that a Liberian-flagged vessel was struck by a missile near Saudi Arabia. Liberia strongly condemned the attack and raised the issue at the International Maritime Organization, emphasizing that attacks on civilian ships violate international maritime laws and threaten global navigation safety.
It is important for people to understand that a Liberian-flagged ship does not necessarily belong to Liberia, because Liberia operates one of the largest ship registries in the world where ships from many countries register under the Liberian flag.
At the end of the day, situations like border disputes are usually resolved through diplomacy and dialogue between governments. Peace and cooperation in the region are always better than conflict.
Before spreading misinformation online, it is important to understand the facts and the history behind what is happening.
