APRIL 12 โ€ข the 100th anniversary of the first Dan grading in Shotokan history, April 12th 1924.

A rare photo of (Hironori) Ohtsuka Sensei (bowing, holding certificate) being awarded his (Shodan) 1st Dan by Master Gichin Funakoshi (standing, behind desk) in 1924โ€“ the year that Funakoshi Sensei adopted the Kyu / Dan grading from judo, which makes Ohtsuka Sensei one of the first people (possibly the very first) ever to be awarded a Karate black belt under this advancement system.
