Faster
“ Faster” is one of the triumphant events organized by the badminton team of University of Kelaniya which promotes badminton among all universities in Sri Lanka and improve the popularity of badminton in school level as well. Faster 2011
“Faster 2011” was the inaugural tournament which was held during 6 consecutive days ( 25th– 30th June 2011) at S. Thomas' College Sports Complex, Mount La
vinia. 735 players from schools and universities were participated for the age group championship and the inter university championship. On the other hand, there was a significant amount of viewers participated for the tournament including parents, coaches, supporters, and even the badminton lovers and the number of viewers were over 2000 within the days of the tournament. Sunil Gunewardena, “Director General, Sports and talent Development, Ministry of Higher Education” was the chief guest at the prize giving. He warmly appreciated the contribution from the organizing committee which was resulted as a significant success of the tournament within such a short period of time. Main sponsor was the Imperial college, Sri Lanka. As long as the financial achievements are considered, the initial budgeted profit were estimated as Rs. 200,000 and the actual amount of profit gained was almost 75% of the budgeted figure stating Rs. 150,000. The profit from the tournament was distributed for the future success of the badminton in University of Kelaniya as well as for the badminton career development of the players in University of Kelaniya. “Faster 2012” the next step was another big hit with a progression. Here except to the Age group Championship and the University Championship a new category was included as Novices. There were 945 players which indicates the successfulness of participation. Again the tournament was held at S. Thomas' College Sports Complex, Mount Lavinia during 8 consecutive days of June. The chief guest was Prof Sarath Amunugama, Vice-Chancellor of University of Kelaniya. Faster 2012 was the second episode behind the victorious attempt of the shuttlers of University of Kelaniya. The upcoming Faster 2013 will be an another revolution in the arena of badminton which make our alma mater proud. This year from 17th to 28th of August Faster 2013 will be held at S.Thomas' College Sports Complex, Mount Lavinia. The University Badminton Team is under lot of commitment to bring in another big hit and this would be another episode of Faster crew and may the spirit continue….
