Borderlands, along with the Overseas School of Colombo, recently conducted a Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award expedition as they paddled canoes down the Kelani River. Borderlands emphasized independence as the group navigated Class 2 rapids and tackled the lower half of the river on their own. They camped and cooked under the watchful eye of Borderlands staff but stayed completely independent in their award assessment. The journey also offered challenging experiences as they encountered environmental issues, such as sand mining on the river, where men dive down to the riverbed to collect buckets of sand for transport. This expedition was a powerful reminder of both the resilience of the participants and the importance of protecting our natural waterways. The trip also highlighted the massive floods that affected the Kalani river about five months ago. These floods seen the river rise around 8 to 10 m in some places.

Borderlands, in partnership with the Overseas School of Colombo, recently led a Silver Duke of Edinburgh Award expedition to Kalpitiya. During this immersive journey, students paddled independently across the waters, taking charge of their own navigation, cooking, and daily needs. The program, under careful guidance, fostered greater independence and resilience in the outdoors, as students faced and overcame challenges. The beauty of the location was breathtaking—we spent a night in an old church perched on the peninsula in Portugal Bay. Sri Lanka offers the perfect backdrop for adventure-based programs, and Borderlands has been pioneering sea kayaking expeditions in Kalpitiya for over 23 years.
