💡DID YOU KNOW that Duncan White grew up in Kandy??

Duncan White was born on 1st March 1918 in Kaluthara and was the second of four children. His family has later moved to Kandy and Duncan White got his school education from a leading school in Kandy. It's said that Duncan's house was located near Udawatte Kale Forrest which was 200m away from his school and he used to run to the school after he heard the 1st bell..

Duncan later became the first athlete to win an Olympic Medal for Srilanka and this achievement was not equaled by any South Asian athlete in track and field at the Olympics for another 52 years until Susanthika Jayasinghe won a silver medal in the 200 meters in 2000.

Duncan passed away at the age of 80 on 3rd July 1998 in Nuneaton, Warwickshire, Great Britain.
After his death, Hon. Lakshman Kadirgamar said:

“White’s sporting career was not a bed of roses, at one point he was struggling even to buy a proper pair of spikes, but his strong desire to win bought him up to where he was.’’
