Back to School - After 45 Years
The ‘Back to School ‘ event, held on 10th Dec 2023, gave a memorable and nostalgic opportunity for the surviving members of the 1977 College first XI cricket team to have a great fellowship at the college premises on 10 Dec 2023. It was sad to recall the demise of Ranja Hewawasam, our captain, who left us at a very young age under tragic circumstances.
The very reason for this gathering was that one of our then teammates, Nandasiri, had become totally blind. It was very strange that most of us had never met as a group since leaving college. Our feelings at that moment, when we met in front of the college entrance gate, cannot be expressed in words as it was a gathering after four and a half decades.
The only match that was won in 1977 was against St. Servatius’ College, Matara, that was played in Galle. We lost to Richmond and Mahinda, by an innings and also to St. Sebastian’s College, Moratuwa and to Devenanda Vidyalaya, Ambalangoda. We drew with Rahula College, Matara and Dharmashoka College, Ambalangoda.
During that period, we were compelled to play with minimum facilities and cricketing gear such as bats, pads, gloves, balls and helmets. A single good bat had to be handed over to the striker, with the non-striker taking the defective bat to be used to crease the bat when running between wickets. Balls for practices were very scarce; purchasing was done through a ‘Hat collection’ from among team members. Our batting pads were damaged and had to be fastened with handkerchiefs as the fastening leather straps or their buckles were broken.
The pathetic scenario was that our practice pitch was at the Harbor Entrance end of the grounds. Sometimes, the ball went through the covering nets across the road to the grassy patch close to the beach, which was full of crab holes. Many a time, the balls were never recovered.
The reason behind all the mentioned drawbacks was that the college didn’t have the necessary funds and our benevolent “big brother”, the Colombo OBA was not kept informed or was unaware of this situation.
I should also mention to our readers another reason for our poor performances. Three of our team members who performed well in the college ‘C’ & ‘B’ division house matches left college prior to sitting for the Ordinary Level exam and performed well in other schools in 1977, that they had joined: Ranjan Paranawitha went on to captain, Kalutara Vidyalaya , Rajendra Wijemanna captained, St. Anne’s Kurunegala and Mohan de Silva opened batting for Dharmasoka College, Ambalangoda. It’ no wonder that talent and skills get drained during difficult periods.
Anyway, thank God we continued to play the game to the best of our ability in such difficult circumstances. Our message to the present college cricket teams is to keep the college flag flying high even when the circumstances are challenging; always focus on the college motto ‘Strive Manfully’.
