「憎しみは憎しみによってやむのではなく、慈悲（愛）によってのみやむ」。

1951年、サンフランシスコ講和会議の場においで、当時のスリランカ大臣であったジャヤワルダナ元大統領が放った言葉だ。

敗戦国日本への戦後賠償を求める列強に対して賠償請求をやめるように求めた。スリランカのような小さな国が、長いものにまかれることなく、イジメはやめろと言わんばかりに声を上げることがどれほど勇気がいったことだろうか。

あれから75年の節目を迎える2026年。日本は緊迫するイラン情勢に対して、国益を守るという名目のもとに、長いものに巻かれることにするのか。それとも、知恵を働かせて別の手段で世の中の流れを良い方向に向かわせるようなイニシアティブを取るのか。

イタリアに古くから伝わるとされる言葉「困難に直面したら過去から学べ」のとおり、75年前の故ジャヤワルダナ閣下の言葉を学び、平和な世界の実現のために知恵を絞り、独自の存在感を示す手段はあるだろう。
