Sri Lanka - Japan Friendship Baseball Ground Diyagama,Homagama Namal Rajapakshe (MP), Mr. Mahindananda Aluthgamage (Sports Minister), Mr. Bandula Goonawardene (Minister of Education), Gamini Lokuge (MP), Mr. Mr.

The first baseball ground in Sri Lanka as well as in the South Asian region will be inaugurated by His Excellency President Mahinda Rajapaksa at the Mahinda Rajapaksa International Sports Complex in Diyagama, Homagama was opened on 23rd December 2012. The first ever baseball ground in South Asia was opened on

a grand note at Mahinada Rajapaksha Sports Complex – Homagama today with the representation of number of ministers, MPs and government officials including Mr. Upali Kodikaara and Mr. Yosh*tha Rajapakshe. Representing the Japanese government Japanese ambassador of Sri Lanka, Mr. Nobuhitho Hobo and several officials participated the opening ceremony. Namal Rajapakshe batted a ball pitched by Mr. Nobuhitho Hobo to symbolize the ground opening which simultaneously opened a novel experience for all Sri Lankans. The ground opening was followed by an exhibition match played between Sri Lanka under 18 baseball team and Kaganawa baseball association team which arrived at a conclusion at 3-0 where Kaganawa baseball association team beat Sri Lanka under 18 baseball team in a very sharp contest which ran up to 8 innings with Kaganawa scoring in the 1st, 6th and 8th innings witha lot of effort due to a wonderfull display of baseballing skills by Sri Lankan lads. Sri Lanka team was captained by Krishna Hapuaarachchi which was supported by a huge crowd at the ground and on CSN channel for the first time in history. It should be highlighted that this ground became a reality following a concept of Mr. Yasuma Wathanbe, who silently delighted at the ground leading Sri Lanka squad for a one last time and also trying to hide the tears of joy came out of his eyes where he could not control his genuine emotions while ‘Fathers of victory’ were showing their colours here and there overenthusiastically. What Baseball Confab has to say is ‘People become ACTORS in front of the whole world while still failing to do the same in front of their own consciences’. ‘The Silent Pioneer’ -Mr. Wathanabe- who made ‘The Sri Lankan dream of baseball a reality should be ever saluted by all.
