Former Presidential Advisor John Nagenda has passed away. Nagenda, who had a distinguished career as both a cricketer and a writer, died on Thursday. He was a former cricketer who played one One Day International for East Africa in the 1975 World Cup. Nagenda first started playing cricket at Kings' College Budo in the 1950s and went on to play cricket for Uganda.

In 1975, Nagenda appeared in one first-class cricket match in England. He was also a writer of fiction and poetry in the 1960s and is regarded as having been one of the pioneers of writing in East Africa. Nagenda studied English literature with such luminaries as James Ngugi, later to be known as Ngugi wa Thiongo.

Nagenda's political career started in the 1980s when he became a member of the National Resistance Movement's external wing. He later evolved into a presidential advisor on the media in 1989. Until last year, Nagenda authored One Man's Week column in the New Vision. He later compiled this into a book, also known as One Man's Week: Unreserved Wisdom, which was published in 2019.

Nagenda's passing is a loss to the Ugandan community, particularly to those who knew him personally and to the literary and sporting communities in Uganda and beyond. His contributions to cricket and literature will be remembered for years to come.

Hey everyone, who is coming to The Plumbley Lunch? It's at The East India Club, 16 St James's Square, London SW1Y 4LH.

I will be making the effort to come over from France so why don't you? I may even wear a tie for a while!

Cost: £50 for a three-course lunch including wine and any amount of rambling about cricket and life in general. There may even be an appearance from John Nagenda our Stoic in Africa. If you have not heard him speak you must come. I might interview him about African polirtics!

Dress: Gentlemen, jacket and tie. Ladies, dress accordingly.

We have decided to look at the possibility of another Stoic tour. I would be interested to know how many people think it's a good idea. Gavin Scovell and I will once again plan a full itinerary to Capetown in January 2018. Please express opinions and hopefully, support.

Plumbly T20 2016 – So near…

In this year’s Plumbly T20 at Sunbury CC the Stoics came so close to winning the cup.

In the first game the Stoics beat the Free Foresters off the last ball chasing 170 and then beat Sunbury in the next game.

In the final against the Charterhouse Friars we lost by one run chasing 176. So near yet….

Hello, everyone. We will be making efforts to promote this page and make it the centre of our clubs activities. Please visit this page regularly if you are interested or playing for the club. I recently took over Admin rights on a duplicate group Stoics cricket club. I am not sure who set this up, does anyone no? It will be taken down to merge with this group. Is anyone interested in helping?

On Friday August 5 a very strong Stoics T20 side are at Sunbury CC from 10.30 am to play in the annual Plumbly Trophy. We have won it in the past and hope that this year we can repeat that. Babs Oduwule has found a strong side with three first class cricketers and one with Minor Counties experience. We hope whatever the result that a good day is had by all.

Dear Member,

I have just posted a news item which illustrates the typical Stoics game and why you should be playing more of it.

It is also a credit to Bob Mayston who found the fixture, raised the side but couldn't quite manage the inaugural win!

The next game is at Beaconsfield on July 31 andd David Valder is still looking for players. Contact him or myself please if you would like to play.

Bob is the nrunning another game in Sussex at Hurstpierpoint and then we are defending our title in the Gerald Plumbly 20/20 at SUnbury. I already have a squad named but if you are a candidate and consider yourself a T20 ace then you should be asking to play.

Wed 31 Jul 2013 Beckenham CC Away 11.30am all day

Thu 08 Aug 2013 Old Hurstjohnians CC Away (Hurstpierpoint College) 11.30am all day

Fri 09 Aug 2013 Gerald Plumbly 20/20 Away (Sunbury CC) 10.15am all day

Kind regards
