A New Era for Sri Lankan Boxing: Aiming for Gold at 2026 International Games
COLOMBO – Sri Lankan boxing has officially entered a transformative new chapter, marking the end of a 15-year hiatus from direct Ministry of Sports patronage. The Boxing Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) has formally extended its gratitude to the Honorable Minister of Sports, Sunil Gamage, for his pivotal role in bringing the sport back under the Ministry’s protective wing—a move expected to provide much-needed stability and resources for local pugilists.
Boxing, a cornerstone of the Olympic movement, remains one of the few disciplines where Sri Lanka holds a realistic prospect for international podium finishes. Under the new leadership of BASL President Anuruddha Shanaka Bandara and General Secretary M.A.L. Perera, the association has launched a strategic roadmap focused on modernizing athlete experiences and high-performance training.
"Our singular goal is to see the Sri Lankan flag raised high on the global stage," a representative stated, highlighting the renewed energy within the association”
With the 2026 Commonwealth Games and Asian Games on the horizon, the national pools have already commenced rigorous preparations. Coaches and athletes are reportedly working around the clock to refine their technique and endurance. The association’s unified vision is clear: to translate this newfound administrative support into "gold for the nation" and restore Sri Lanka’s reputation as a boxing powerhouse in the region.
