SRI LANKA MEN’S BASKETBALL TEAM SECURES VITAL 72-65 WIN OVER KYRGYZSTAN IN FIBA ASIA CUP PRE-QUALIFIERS

The Sri Lanka Men’s National Basketball Team delivered a composed performance to defeat Kyrgyzstan 72-65 yesterday at the Baluan Sholak Sport Palace in Almaty, Kazakhstan, in the FIBA Asia Cup Pre-Qualifiers Group B.

In a tightly contested first half, Sri Lanka trailed narrowly at the break 31-33. Team Sri Lanka regrouped in the second half, outscoring Kyrgyzstan 20-16 in the 3rd quarter and 21-16 in the 4th to secure a crucial 2 points in the group standings.

Key Performers
Sri Lanka:
Simron Yogananthan led the way with a game-high 27 points and was instrumental in the 4th quarter comeback.
Praneeth Udumalagala also supported well with 22 points and a last moment match winning 3 pointer.

Kyrgyzstan
Adylbekov was the top scorer for Kyrgyzstan with 18 points and Kapakov scored 11 points.

With this win, Sri Lanka takes a massive step toward qualification for the next round of the FIBA Asia Cup Pre-Qualifiers. The victory reflects the team’s discipline, fast-break ex*****on, and defensive pressure under pressure.

Sri Lanka lost to much fancied Palastine 63 to 121 (Half time 34 - 62 ) during their 2nd game of the group B in FIBA Asia Cup 2029 Qualifiers worked off in Almaty, Kazakhstan.

Sri Lankan players could not match 3 point accuracy and tight defence of the Palastine players. Palastine coaches have done their homework well to tightly guard our key players where they could not get into their usual playing rhythem at all.

SRI LANKA VS PALESTINE

After an impressive win yesterday, Sri Lanka enters today's high-stakes clash against Palestine at 4pm at the Baluan Sholak Sport Palace Stadium in Almaty, Kazakhstan with high spirits, renewed confidence, and genuine momentum. Palestine presents a stern and physically demanding test with their frontcourt height and outer scoring capabilities, offering Sri Lanka a major opportunity to showcase their growth on the continental stage.

From a Sri Lankan perspective, the key to competing lies in keeping the winning mentality established from the opening tip. On paper Palestine holds an edge, but Sri Lanka can disrupt their rhythm by forcing a blistering tempo, executing sharp perimeter ball movement, and committing to relentless team rebounding. Staying disciplined under full-court pressure, limiting turnovers, and knocking down early perimeter shots will allow Sri Lanka to stay competitive and dictate terms.

In Memory of Mr. Suresh Subramaniam

The Sri Lanka Basketball Federation joins the sporting community in mourning the passing of Mr. Suresh Subramaniam, Honorary Life President of the National Olympic Committee of Sri Lanka, former President of NOC Sri Lanka, and a distinguished leader who dedicated much of his life to the advancement of sport in our country.

Mr. Suresh was a respected administrator, visionary sportsman and, above all, a true gentleman. His leadership, integrity, wisdom and unwavering commitment to athletes, sports organisations and the Olympic Movement earned him the admiration and respect of generations within the sporting fraternity.

His influence extended far beyond administration. Through his guidance, mentorship and dedication to the development of sport, he helped shape the sporting landscape of Sri Lanka and inspired countless athletes, officials and administrators. His contribution to sport, both nationally and internationally, will be remembered with deep gratitude and respect.

On behalf of the Executive Committee, players, coaches, officials and the entire Sri Lanka Basketball Federation family, we extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and all those whose lives were touched by him.

Sri Lankan sport has lost one of its finest gentlemen, but his legacy will endure through the many lives he inspired.

May his soul rest in eternal peace. 🕊️
