(AFP) - Ishant Sharma took seven wickets as India ended a run of 15 Tests without an away victory in an emphatic 95-run win over England at Lord’s on Monday.
This victory, only India’s second in 17 Tests at Lord’s, put the tourists 1-0 up in the five-match series ahead of the third Test in Southampton on Sunday. The first Test in Nottingham was drawn.
“I felt in the last couple of series outside India (in South Africa and New Zealand) were were in a position to win,” said India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni.
“What was important was to keep working hard and it was just fantastic to see the determination and effort the guys showed.”
England, set 319 for victory, collapsed to 223 all out on Monday’s final day.
Sharma took four wickets for nine runs in 21 balls after lunch as a succession of England batsmen were undone by his bouncer.
In total, the 25-year-old finished with a Test-best seven for 74 to win the man-of-the-match award.
But Sharma said Dhoni deserved credit for encouraging him to bowl short.
“I don’t think all the wickets are for me, they are for the captain because he’s the one that told me, ‘you are tall enough so you have to bowl a bouncer, you have to use your height’. That’s what I did and it worked for me.”
This result extended England’s run without a Test victory to 10 successive matches.
However, under-pressure England captain Alastair Cook said he would not quit as skipper.
“Until that bloke taps me on the shoulder and says ‘we don’t want you to captain’ I’m desperate to try to turn this around for England…I’m here as long as I’m wanted.”
Monday’s slump saw England, who had been 173 for four, lose their last six wickets for 50 runs.
Sharma’s final figures surpassed the his previous Test-best six for 51 against New Zealand in Wellington earlier this year.
England looked as if they would bat through Monday’s first session without losing a wicket.
- England bounced out -
But to the very last ball before lunch, Moeen Ali turned his head away from a Sharma bouncer and gloved a simple catch to Cheteshwar Pujara at short leg.
It was the end of his three-hour, 39 and a fifth-wicket stand of 101 with Joe Root, then unbeaten on 52.
The resumption saw several England batsmen fall to bouncer traps that could not have been more obvious had they been signposted.
Wicketkeeper Matt Prior, who has had a torrid season behind the stumps, decided to hook Sharma. Several men were positioned for the shot in the deep, Prior did not get over the top of the ball and picked out Murali Vijay at mid-wicket.
Ben Stokes fell for a duck when he miscued an intended pull to Pujara at wide mid-on.
Root, on 66, also fell to Sharma’s bouncer, hooking Sharma straight to Stuart Binny at deep backward square leg.
Stuart Broad too could not cope with a rising delivery, gloving Sharma down the legside to wicketkeeper Dhoni, with England now on the brink of defeat at 216 for nine.
The match ended when James Anderson was run out by Ravindra Jadeja’s direct hit, with the two players both facing a possible suspension following their alleged confrontation at Trent Bridge.
England collapsed to 72 for four on Sunday, with Sharma removing the two senior batsmen in Cook and Ian Bell
Cook was out for 22 to make it 27 innings since the last of his England record 25 Test hundreds.
Bell fared even worse, bowled for one as his run without a Test century was extended to 19 innings.
Cook elected to field on a typically English ‘green top’ after winning the toss and saw India decline to 147 for seven.
But, not for the first time in recent matches, England failed to polish off the tail as India made 295 with Ajinkya Rahane scoring 103.
It was a similar story in India’s second innings when, after opener Vijay’s patient 95, an eighth-wicket stand of 99 in just 100 balls between the dashing Jadeja (68) and Bhuvneshwar Kumar (52) saw the tourists to 342.Powered by WPeMatico

(Reuters) - England captain Steven Gerrard has announced his retirement from international soccer, theFootballAssociation said on Monday.
The Liverpool midfielder won 114 caps for his country after making his debut in a 2-0 win over Ukraine at Wembley in 2000.
“I have enjoyed every minute of representing my country, and it is a sad day for me knowing that I won’t pull on the England shirt again,” he told the FA’s website (thefa.com).
Gerrard’s appearance at the World Cup inBrazillast month was the sixth time he had represented England at a major tournament, but it ended in failure as Roy Hodgson’s side went out at the group stage.
Gerrard appeared to be particularly affected by the disappointment – never more so than after the 2-1 defeat by Uruguay, when his misjudged header allowed Luis Suarez to score the late winner.
The 34-year-old said he was retiring from internationals in part to ensure he can keep playing at a high level for Liverpool.
“I’d like to firstly thank my family and friends for all their support throughout my England journey,” Gerrard said.
“I’d also like to thank everyone who has been part of my international career, from the England managers I’ve played under to the staff at the FA and, of course, all the players I’ve been fortunate to play alongside.
“In particular, the supporters have been amazing, not least in Brazil, when they got behind the team despite the disappointing results.
“I’d especially like to thank Roy (Hodgson), firstly for giving me the captaincy permanently when he took the job, making me the proudest man in the country and allowing me to fulfill my childhood dream.
“He has been very understanding over the past few weeks and is a man I will always hold in the highest regard.
“This has been a very difficult decision, one of the toughest I’ve had to make in my career. I have agonised over this since coming back from Brazil and have spoken to family, friends and people close to me in the game before coming to this point.
“Most importantly, Brendan (Rodgers, Liverpool manager) has been fantastic and obviously I have to look after my body as much as possible to ensure I can give everything when I take to the field.
“To ensure I can keep playing to a high level and giving everything to Liverpool, I believe this is the right decision, and having Champions League football back at Anfield is another big factor in my decision.”
Hodgson told the FA: “While I’m disappointed in the decision, I can entirely understand Steven’s situation and can have no complaints given the incredible service he has given to his country.
“I must respect his wishes due to the discussions we have had and the amount of thought and consideration he himself has given it.
“He is an incredible man and a fantastic footballer who we have all been blessed to see in an England shirt so often.
“It is never by coincidence that people reach such a staggering figure as 114 caps – it is a mark of his wonderful talent allied to a huge drive and determination to live up to the highest standard.
“He is not only a player to bring crowds to their feet with moments of brilliance; he was a tremendous captain and an exceptional role model for everyone who was fortunate to come into contact with him.
“We shall miss his leadership qualities as we look ahead to the qualification campaign (for Euro 2016) with a youthful group of players.”
Gerrard captained England 38 times, scored 21 goals for his country, and was the third most capped England player of all time behind Peter Shilton (125) and David Beckham (115).
His final appearance was against Costa Rica at the World Cup, when he came on as a 73rd-minute substitute in a 0-0 draw.
The FA said Gerrard will continue his strong relationship with the governing body in a “high profile ambassadorial role”.Powered by WPeMatico

(AFP) -England have often looked a haunted side during their ongoing run of nine Tests without a win.
And according to pacemanStuart Broadthey have a particular reason to be spooked during matches in London after ghostly goings-on at the team hotel.
Broad said several members of the side and their partners had endured difficulty sleeping at the five-star Langham Hotel in central London, with some players changing rooms in order to get some rest.
Although Broad said he had endured no unexplained disturbances while sleeping during the ongoing second Test against India at London’s Lord’s ground, that wasn’t the case when England played Sri Lanka at the ‘home of cricket’ last month.
“During the Sri Lanka Test I had to move rooms,” fast bowler Broad told the Mail on Sunday.
“One night I woke up in the middle of the night, around 1.30am and I was convinced there was a presence in the room. It was the weirdest feeling.
“I turned the light on and looked online and could see (England wicketkeeper) Matt Prior was online, too. I went to his room and he said exactly the same thing! He was wide awake as well.
“Neither of us could sleep because we were so spooked out. Matt was in a twin room so I ended up sharing with him.”
It is not the first time Test cricketers have been subjected to supposed paranormal activity.
Back in 2005, Australia all-rounder Shane Watson was spooked by the ghost said to haunt Durham’s Lumley Castle where the team were staying ahead of a match at the nearby Chester-le-Street ground in north-east England.Powered by WPeMatico

(Reuters) - Nico Rosberg gaveGermanyanother win to celebrate after their World Cup success with a home grand prix triumph for Mercedes on Sunday that stretched his overall lead in the Formula One championship to 14 points.
Untroubled from pole position to chequered flag, the newly-married German’s commanding victory added another highlight to a week that had begun with the signing of a multi-year contract extension.
Lewis Hamilton, his team mate and only real title rival, finished third after starting in 20th place and then making 15 overtaking manoeuvres as he charged back through the field in one of the more determined drives of his career.
Finland’s Valtteri Bottas took second place for Williams, his third podium finish in a row and a hefty 20.7 seconds behind Rosberg, afterBrazilian team mate Felipe Massa crashed at the start in a collision that brought out the safety car.
Rosberg was the first to win for a works Mercedes team inGermanysince Argentine Juan Manuel Fangio in 1954 and first German home winner for a German team since the championship started in 1950.
“What a great day after so many great events for me this week,” he said. “I came here hoping for a win and it worked out perfectly.”
If it did not quite compare to getting married as the best feeling of all, it was still pretty good.
“That was the best feeling,” he said of his Monaco wedding last week. “But of course everything has been special…many positive things happening in the two weeks, or week and a half. It’s been really enjoyable, and also this weekend with pole and the win.
“Just awesome. A very, very special day today.”
Rosberg now has 190 points to Hamilton’s 176 with Australian Daniel Ricciardo third on 106.
The German’s fourth victory of the season had looked inevitable from the moment a brake disc failed on Hamilton’s car in the first phase of qualifying on Saturday, sending the Briton spinning hard into the barriers.
Between them, the Mercedes drivers have won nine out of 10 races so far in 2014 and in normal circumstances would have been celebrating another one-two on an overcast afternoon that only turned to rain after the finish.
The 50,000 spectators, a disappointing attendance in a season dominated by Mercedes, were treated instead to the sight of Hamilton on a charge to limit the damage and a series of other thrilling duels further down the field.
Mercedes had warned fans to buckle up for the ride and Hamilton delivered with a swashbuckling drive that saw him go three abreast at times, picking off Kimi Raikkonen’s Ferrari and Ricciardo’s Red Bull in one swoop.
Hamilton was 10th after 10 of the 67 laps and up to second after 16, banging wheels and bodywork along the way but escaping with only a damaged front wing when he clipped former team mate Jenson Button’s McLaren.
Had he not damaged the wing and lost downforce, he would probably have passed Bottas. But he could not prevent the Finn becoming the first Williams driver since Colombian Juan Pablo Montoya in 2003 to rack up three successive podiums.
“I had great fun,” said Hamilton on the podium.
“I did as good as I could. It was hard to get through the pack safely and I had a little bit of a collision with Jenson. I thought he was going to open the door which he has done a couple of times lately but that was my bad judgement.
“It was hard to overtake so I’m glad to get some points today,” added the 2008 champion.
Germany’s quadruple champion Sebastian Vettel, last year’s winner at the Nuerburgring, was fourth for Red Bull ahead of Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso in fifth.
Ricciardo was sixth for Red Bull with Force India’s Nico Hulkenberg seventh and Button eighth.
Danish rookie Kevin Magnussen, whose contact with Massa at the start after they lined up third and fourth pitched the Williams upside down, recovered to take ninth place.
Mexican Sergio Perez made it a double scoring finish for Force India.
There was also controversy at the decision not to deploy a safety car when Adrian Sutil’s Sauber was left stranded for two laps in the middle of the track after the fast final corner into the pit straight.
Marshals eventually ran across the track, pushing it back as cars sped past.
Russian Daniil Kvyat also had to make a hasty exit from his Toro Rosso after it caught fire, with the car then engulfed in flames when he parked it up.Powered by WPeMatico

(AFP) - England captain Alastair Cook’s dreadful run of form continued as he was dismissed for just 22 on the fourth day of the second Test against India at Lord’s on Sunday.
The left-handed opener fell in all-too familiar fashion when, having batted for more than two hours, he pushed at a ball outside off stump from seamerIshant Sharmaand was caught behind for the second time in the match by opposing captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni.
That made it 27 innings since the 29-year-old Cook had scored the last of his England record 25 Test hundreds.
And it also meant that Cook had totalled a meagre 129 runs in nine Test innings this calendar year.
The more immediate concern for England was that Cook’s latest dismissal came during a collapse that saw England lose three wickets for two runs as they slumped to 72 for four chasing an imposing 319 for victory in a bid to go 1-0 up in the five-match series.
“Alastair Cook was doing okay, but he was doing alright in the first innings until he got out,” England opening great Geoffrey Boycott, commentating for BBC Radio’s Test Match Special, said.
“He can’t totally eradicate his faults. The selectors are all hoping he gets a fifty but it’s not happening for him and it might be even worse for him tomorrow (Monday) if England lose”
By Sunday’s close, England had reached 105 for four, with Joe Root 14 not out and Moeen Ali unbeaten on 15.
Cook’s slump has coincided with an England run of nine successive Tests without a victory, their worst for more than 20 years.
Before play began Sunday, Michael Vaughan became the latest former England captain to suggest Cook needed to shed the responsibilities of leadership if he was to regain his form as a batsman.
“We have reached the stage with Cook when he cannot be enjoying cricket. You don’t when you are not playing well and the team is struggling,” Vaughan, England’s 2005 Ashes-winning captain, wrote in his Telegraph column.
“It is easy for the England and Wales Cricket Board hierarchy to say it is going to stick by him but it has to ask what is best for the team and for Cook.
“The ECB has a responsibility to Cook the person to do the right thing and if that means taking the captaincy away then so be it.”Powered by WPeMatico

Bryan Robson expects Robin van Persie to captain Manchester United next season.
One ofLouis van Gaal’s biggest priorities in his new role as United boss is to select a skipper following the summer exit ofNemanja Vidic.
After spending 10 years at the clubWayne Rooneywas tipped to take the captain’s armband, but Van Persie skippered the Dutch national side at the World Cup and he enjoys a good relationship with the new man in charge at Old Trafford.
Last week Van Gaal said he would take time to decide who should take the honour, andRobsonappears to think the Dutchman has already made up his mind.
“Robin was his captain of Holland, so that is an obvious one,” he said.
“I would be really surprised if he didn’t give Robin it.”
The close bond between Van Gaal and Van Persie was clear to see throughout the World Cup.
The pair spoke publicly about their admiration for each other and Van Persie raced over to the bench following his stunning opening goal againstSpainto give his manager a big high five.
Van Gaal defied his critics to guide Holland to the semi-finals of the World Cup before they were knocked out byArgentinaon penalties.
Robson believes Holland’s run to the last four bodes well for United, who finished seventh last year under David Moyes.
“He has been a winner all his coaching career so hopefully he will install that back into the club,” said Robson, who played 461 times during a 13-year spell at United.
“In the World Cup Holland were very good. Tactically he got them really well-drilled and I thought they were very unlucky. I thought they were better than Argentina, and they could have gone all the way.”
Van Gaal has put his squad through tough training sessions since landing in Los Angeles, where United kick off their pre-season campaign on Wednesday against LA Galaxy.
The players in the 25-man squad, which includes new signings Anders Herrera andLuke Shaw, have been keen to impress their new manager, who was appointed as Moyes’ successor in May.
The pain and disappointment of last year’s dismal showing under the Scot will also be driving the players on, according to Robson.
“The fans and the club were disappointed last year, but nobody hurts more than players,” said Robson, who won two league titles, one Cup Winners’ Cup and three FA Cups during his time at Old Trafford.
“I know these players. They have won the title, the Champions League, and a lot of them were really disappointed about what happened so the lads that are still at the club will want to bounce back, they will want to prove to people that they are top players and they can win things.”
Robson thinks United could fall short though unless they sign a centre-back.
Last season United conceded 43 goals. After losing Vidic, Rio Ferdinand and possiblyPatrice Evra, Robson is concerned United lack experience in their back line.
“When you lose three class defenders like that you need to bring in a really top-drawer centre-half to the club. That would really give us a chance of winning the title,” Robson said.
“You look back over the years and United have had Nemanja and Rio as a pairing, Brucey (Steve Bruce) and Pally (Gary Pallister).
“Then we had Jaap Stam. He was a really dominant and aggressive player and we need one of those to come in to the club.”
Robson believesBruno Martins Indiwould have been the ideal signing for United.
The 22-year-old Holland centre-back joined Porto from Feyenoord on Wednesday after enjoying a successful World Cup under Van Gaal.
“He really impressed me inBrazil, especially against Argentina when they were up against it,” Robson said.
“He had a really good tournament. He had a big presence on the pitch and we need someone like that.”

Cristiano Ronaldo’s mother Dolores Aveiro has revealed in her autobiography that she had tried to abort the Portuguese football star when she was pregnant.
In the book, Mae Coragem, released in Portugal on Friday, Aveiro claims that she drank warm beer and ran “until she dropped” after the doctors had refused to terminate her pregnancy, reported the Independent.
“I wanted to abort but the doctor didn’t support my decision,” Spanish newspaper La Razon, which is serialising the book, quoted her as writing.
Aveiro said Ronaldo knew about the incident.
“He told me when he found out, ‘Look mum, you wanted to abort and now I’m the one who’s pulling the purse-strings in the house’.”
Ronaldo, regarded widely as one of the best footballers in the world today, failed to inspire Portugal in the FIFA World Cup as they were ousted in the group stages.

(AFP) - South Africa coach Russell Domingo on Saturday denied his team was earning a reputation for ball tampering afterVernon Philanderbecome the second bowler in the last nine months to be fined for the offence.
Philander was on Fridayfined 75 percent of his match feesafter footage emerged of him attempting to change the condition of the ball by scratching the surface with his fingers and thumb during the ongoing first Test against Sri Lanka.
“No I don’t think so (that we are earning a reputation). I’d hate to say that other sides are a bit better at doing it than we are,” Domingo said after the fourth day’s play at the Galle International Stadium.
“We don’t try to do it intentionally. He (Philander) said he was cleaning it but it’s (now) done,” Domingo said.
South Africa were involved in a similar incident against Pakistan in the UAE last October when TV coverage showedFaf du Plessis rubbing the ball close to the zipper of his trouser pocket. The bowler was fined 50 percent of his match fees.
Domingo said he had not seen the latest footage and it was hard for him to comment in detail.
“We need to move on and put it behind us. Nine times out of ten if they have footage you will be found guilty.
“We try to play the game in the right spirit. It’s not something we set out to do. Maybe it’s something we should cut out completely.”
“But at the same time, I haven’t seen the footage so it’s difficult to comment on. The umpires say the condition of the ball wasn’t changed at all, and that says it all.”
Philander has bowled 21 overs so far in the match without taking a wicket.Powered by WPeMatico
