Felician Fernando (Speaks German/English) is the Base leader/ diving instructor at Sri Lanka Diving Tours and is one of the most experienced, technically competent diving instructors in Sri Lanka. Feli has been diving since the age of 16.and is a PADI IDC staff instructor with more than 12 specialties and 3000 logged dives. Apart from his technical expertise, Feli has a vast knowledge and experie

nce of Sri Lanka’s best diving sites. He has dived extensively in Sri Lanka, the Maldives, Singapore, Malaysia, Anambas Indonesia, United Arab Emirates and many other places. Fluent in both English and German Feli considers his finding of the location of the world’s first purpose built air craft carrier, the HMS Hermes in the year 2002, which was sunk by the Japanese during the 2nd world war, off the East coast of Sri Lanka, as the highlight of his career as a diver. Diving to the Hermes according to Feli is the ultimate wreck dive adventure, demanding a considerable amount of skill and experience. As the wreck lies at a depth of 58m this type of dive must be undertaken only with the most competent of diving instructors. With Feli’s technical competence, vast experience and intimate knowledge of this spectacular dive site, Feli can offer up an unforgettable tour of the Hermes to you. Feli manages Sri Lanka Diving Tour’s well equipped dive centre at Negombo Sri Lanka. This is the only service provider to offer Technical Diving and Trimix air fills. Volunteer divers of The Pearl Protectors dived for the 4th time to remove discarded/ghost fishing nets found at Butterfly rock reef in Batticaloa. The dive was a success as the divers collected 90% of the nets which had entangled the reef for the past decade.

A total of 35kg discarded nets were removed. This included lead weights of the nets and mostly nylon nets (madel nets)

Stax Inc is the Expedition Patron of the Cleaner Seabeds for Sri Lanka while Sri Lanka Diving Tours supported in providing scuba equipment

Special thanks goes out to the 14 volunteers of The Pearl Protectors who joined in for the dive.

This cleanup by far is the largest underwater cleanup conducted in the Eastern Province. Subsequent perception survey of the local fishermen was also conducted along with the cleanup.

Collected nets were handed over to Waste Less Arugambay which uses the discarded nets for recycling and upcycling purposes. Lead weights of the nets will be upcycled to make diving weights.

The expedition will continue to make our seabeds cleaner

Bombed off the east coast of sri lanka by the Japanese Imperial Navy on the 9th of April 1942.
