The idea was simple: when the waves are good, go. The work gets done anyway.

It only holds if nobody’s counting. No sign-in sheet, no quiet look when someone’s chair is empty at 3pm on a Tuesday.

Most teams will tell you they trust each other. Watch what happens the first time someone leaves early and the work still gets done. That’s the real answer.

A leadership team we worked with had zero visible conflict. Meetings ended on time. Everyone nodded. Decisions got made.

Except the same decisions kept getting quietly re-litigated in side conversations for weeks after. Nothing was actually settled, it just looked settled in the room.

We didn’t teach them to agree faster. We taught them to disagree out loud, before the meeting ended. Six months in, meetings run longer. Decisions stick.

A growing team isn’t automatically a strong one. It’s just a bigger one, faster than anyone had time to notice.

Every fast-growing company we’ve worked with hits the same blind spot. Headcount is a hiring metric. Culture is a relationship metric. Nobody’s tracking whether the second one is keeping pace with the first, until a new hire admits they’ve never actually spoken to half the department they sit beside.

Growth isn’t the threat. Growing without anyone noticing what’s quietly coming apart underneath it is.

What moved it was whether the quietest person on the team believed they could say something wrong out loud and survive it.

Turns out the smartest room and the safest room are usually the same room.
