Unlike the lobsters you know, Caribbean spiny lobsters have zero pincers. What they do have: heavy armour, sharp forward-pointing spines across the entire body, and two whip-like antennae long enough to send an octopus or nurse shark packing. Grand Cayman's reefs are full of them. ✨

The spotted moray peeking out of the reef and going absolutely nowhere. Those tube-like nostrils above its mouth mean it can smell everything happening out there — it just doesn't feel like participating yet. Practically blind, world-class sense of smell, excellent judge of when to stay in. 🪸

At a cleaning station on a Grand Cayman reef, a mutton snapper holds completely still while Peterson cleaner shrimp work it over — removing parasites from a fish many times their size. One of the reef's oldest agreements. Both sides always show up. 🤝

The white-spotted filefish has an answer. Some filefish eat Acropora coral polyps and absorb their chemical signature — mimicking the scent of coral to become invisible to predators like moray eels that hunt by smell. Not hiding in plain sight. Hiding in plain smell. 👃

It didn't swim away. 😲

Spotted eagle rays cruise Grand Cayman's wall with up to a 10ft wingspan — graceful, unhurried, usually gone before you get close. This one let us get alongside. Then it decided to lead the whole group forward instead. One of those dives you talk about for a while. ✨
