The Jiu Jitsu Gi or Kimono originated in the 1800’s developed by Jigoro Kano as part of the sport of Judo. In order to replicate reality the uniform was designed to restrict freedom of movement similar to the way that clothes do and consists of woven pants, a jacket and a belt. The uniform was then adopted by the Gracie’s as part of the art they learned from Mitsuyo Maeda circa 1917 which was developed into a form of self defence and became what we know today as “Brazilian Jiu Jitsu”.

The Gi’s you see today in Judo and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu are different to their own purpose.
